It was a fabulous day at Antioch High School yesterday as Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) presented a $5,000 Bright Ideas grant to the Academy for Engineering and Designing a Green Environment (EDGE).

“The kind of things you are creating for kids are memorable for kids and they will remember the rest of their lives wherever they go and will help shape where they go and who they become so I want to thank you for that… this is the wave of the future,” said Tom Torlakson, California Superintendent of Public Instruction

The  program that incorporates engineering disciplines to engage students in learning and to explore and prepare students for training for careers in the Energy and Utilities industry.  The grant from PG&E will cover the cost for EDGE participants to take a field trip to the PG&E Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant to enhance their understanding of the ways in which nuclear power helps meet California’s energy needs in a safe, clean and efficient manner.

Here is a video I took of California Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson speaking at yesterdays event.

“You can really focus what young people aspire to be and be excited to work together and work on teamwork and collaboration… it’s really exciting work, cool work and cool results. 97 percent of those taking the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE)  in math pass the firs time in your academy. Isn’t that cool?” said Torlakson.

Elected Officials on hand:

  • California Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson
  • Congressman Jerry McNerney
  • Assemblywoman Susan Bonilla
  • Antioch Council members: Gary Agopian, Mary Rocha, Tony Tiscareno
  • Members of the Antioch School Board
  • Representative from Assemblyman Jim Frazier office
  • Representative from Supervisor Federal Glover and Mary Piepho’s offices

Here are the many pictures I took of this fabulous event (click to enlarge)

The PG&E Bright Ideas program, designed to support the understanding of the energy industry in public schools throughout northern and central California, began in 2005 and has contributed a total of $1,813,211 to 301 schools throughout PG&E’s service territory.   In the spring of 2012, PG&E awarded 27 schools grants totaling $203,500.  The program promotes the understanding of renewable energy through local green or sustainable solar energy related project for K – 12 public schools.  Grants range from $1,000 – $10,000.
