National Weather Service Issues Excessive Heat Warning for San Francisco Bay Area

by ECT

The National Weather Services has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for the San Francisco Bay Area which includes Contra Costa County.

The advisory is in effect from 12:00 pm Friday, July 9 through 11:00 pm Sunday as temperatures are anticipated to be 102-degrees to 110-degrees inland.  Overnight, temperatures will cool to the 70’s inland, if not, 80’s in the hills, ridges and peaks.

Extreme heat will significantly increase the  potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.

The City of Antioch has already announced its cooling centers will be open beginning Thursday. Both the  Antioch Community Center and the Antioch Senior Center.  Both facilities will be open as Cooling Centers beginning Thursday – Sunday, July 8-11 from 12PM – 5PM

The City of Brentwood announced its cooling center will also be open beginning Thursday. The cooling center will be open beginning Thursday, July 8th through Sunday, July 11th, from 1:00 PM-7:00 PM at the Brentwood Community Center 35 Oak Street. Masks and social distancing will be required while inside the community center.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.

Tips:

  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Stay in air conditioned rooms
  • Stay out of the sun
  • Check up on relatives and neighbors
  • don’t leave kids or pets in unattended vehicles
