Liberty High School Senior Takes Top Honors at National Make It With Wool Contest

California Junior contestant, Marissa Sanchez from Brentwood, takes top honors in the 2022 National Make It With Wool Contest that was held on Saturday January 22nd at the Sheraton San Diego. Sun, Sand, and Fabulous Fashions was the theme of the 74th National Fashion Show and Awards Banquet.

According to the National Director, Lynda Johnson of Encampment, Wyoming, 79 contestants from around the U.S. competed at the National level in four different categories: Junior ages 13-16, Senior ages 17-24, Adult ages 25 and older, and Fashion/Apparel Design college students.

Sanchez claimed the Junior Winner title with her stunning two-piece ensemble. Her apple green sleeveless dress with scallop neckline was paired with a black and white houndstooth coat with black round collar, flap pockets, and bright magenta lining.

Marissa received a $1000 Scholarship from Pendleton Woolen Mills, a $500 Cash Award from the American Sheep Industry Women, woolen fabric, and various sewing related prizes. She also has an expense paid trip to the American Sheep Industry Convention in Fort Worth, Texas in January 2023 where she will serve as a Wool Ambassador

Marissa is a high school senior at Liberty High School and has been sewing and competing in the Contra Costa 4-H Clothing and Textiles program for 8 years. She’s also active in Liberty High FFA and Girl Scouts

Other California National contestants included Hailey Andrews from San Diego- Senior category, and Jennifer Serr from Alameda- Adult category.

  • Fashion/ Apparel Design Winner- Maria Olsson, Wisconsin
  • Fashion/ Apparel Design Alternate- Blake Ghali, Texas

The MIWW Contest promotes the beauty and versatility of woolen fabrics and yarns and encourages creativity in sewing, knitting, crocheting and other fiber arts. The contest has a long, colorful history with the first contest being held in 1947 to create interest in sewing with wool. For 74 years, the contest has encouraged personal creativity and showcased thousands of awe-inspiring woolen garments from all over the US.

The California Make It With Wool Contest is held annually in Contra Costa County in mid-November. The contest is open to any California resident interested in creating garments using wool or wool blends of at least 60% wool. Garments can be sewn, knitted, or crocheted. The California winners advance to the National Contest

The National MIWW Contest is under the direction of the American Sheep Industry Women and is held in conjunction with American Sheep Industry annual four-day Convention.

Love the Hounds tooth coat. Congratulations! I was a seamstress when I was younger and loved working with wool.
