The Hayward Police Department announced that Sergeant Scott Lunger was killed in the line of duty this morning following a 3:15 am traffic stop. Lunger was a Brentwood resident and a 15-year-veteran of the Hayward Police Department.

A person of interest is currently being detained.

Here is Haywar Police’s statement that was released Wednesday morning:

We are heartbroken to report that Hayward Police Department Sergeant Scott Lunger was killed in the line of duty this morning following a 3:15 AM traffic stop. The loss is obviously devastating to Sergeant Lunger’s family, and it is also a blow to HPD and the entire Hayward Community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time.

Two Hayward police officers stopped a vehicle about 3:15 a.m. on Lion Street, and shots were fired, according to Hayward police.

Lunger was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds where he later died, police said.

The shooter drove away in a white pickup truck, but his description has not been released.

After the shooting, Oakland police found an abandoned bullet-riddled pickup truck and believe it is connected to the shooting, police said.

“Officer-involved shootings are very difficult,” Hayward police Lt. Eric Krimm said. “No officer comes to work wanting to be involved in that.”

Krimm added that it was a “devastating” incident.

According to the California Highway Patrol, law enforcement will hold a press conference at 10 a.m
