Grayson Bill to Reduce Wildfire Risk Signed Into Law by Governor

by ECT

SACRAMENTO, CA – On Thursday, Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. signed AB 2091, authored by Assemblymember Timothy S. Grayson (D-Concord), into law.

California is incredibly fortunate to be the home of many world-class firefighters, however, it is incumbent on us in the Legislature to produce legislation that will reduce the need for these brave women and men to put themselves in danger fighting off flames,” said Assemblymember Grayson. “AB 2091 is a proactive measure to ensure that our communities are able to implement best practices to protect families and homes from wildfires before they are started.”

AB 2091 will encourage the expanded use of prescribed fire resulting in reduced wildfire risk, increased conservation of firefighting resources, and improved forest and watershed health.

“I want to thank the Governor for signing this measure into law and for joining me in making sure that California is doing all it can to prevent more devastating wildfires from occurring,” Assemblymember Grayson continued.

After enduring record-breaking fires in 2017, 2018 did not bring any disaster relief for the state. According to one report, the three largest California fires since 2000 all burned this year, destroying thousands of homes and tragically resulting in multiple deaths. AB 2091 enables California to join other states with high fire incidence in developing and utilizing comprehensive prescribed fire programs.

Assemblymember Timothy S. Grayson represents the 14th Assembly District which includes the communities of Clayton, Concord, Martinez, Pittsburg, Pleasant Hill, Walnut Creek, Benicia, and Vallejo. For more information, please visit https://a14.asmdc.org/

It’s really pathetic when you have to wait for fire to destroy lives and damage thousands of homes & acreage before common sense kicks in over years & years & years of political correctness!

The tree huggers have kepy property owners from harvesting trees, and they have essentially killed off the logging industry in California. There was a symbiotic relationship between the health of the forest and the logging industry.

Selective tree removal by loggers can be profitable. Clearcutting does not need to be allowed. With Fewer trees, each tree has greater access to groundwater & stays healthier during drought. A healthier tree can better withstand fires and bark beetles.

Additionally, logging companies (not tax payer dollars!) built roads to access the trees. These roads were used by firefighters to gain access to fight fires. They also provided forest access so that we, the public, could camp and enjoy the beautiful forest that belongs to all of us. The government did not have to build these roads—private industry built and maintained these roads.

So, let’s go back to that symbiotic relationship between private industry and the improved health of our forests.

Surely private industry can think of someway to make a profit off of harvesting all of those trees killed by bark beetles. Why not let them have those trees for free. It would improve the health of our forest and it gives the loggers an incentive to do the work without it costing taxpayers any money. In fact, in the long run, it would save taxpayer money.

To Our Legislators:
Please remove the government laws, codes & policies that are preventing logging companies from work that could benefit our forests & the public.
