SACRAMENTO, CA – Concord will be among five sites studied for a possible new campus in the California State University System, Assemblymember Timothy S. Grayson and Senator Steve Glazer announced Monday.
The decision to explore building a new campus in Contra Costa County was part of a budget agreement reached between legislative leaders and Governor Gavin Newsom Sunday. The budget will provide funding to study the feasibility of campuses in Concord, San Mateo, Stockton, Chula Vista and Palm Desert.
“For nearly a decade, since my time on Concord City Council, I’ve been fighting to bring Concord to the forefront of discussions as a worthy home for a new CSU campus, and I am thrilled to see the Conference Committee has recognized Concord’s merits,” said Assemblymember Grayson. “The inclusion of Concord in the study is a huge step towards bringing world-class higher education to the doorstep of Contra Costa residents and making the dream of a college education more accessible and attainable.”
After years of city of community collaboration, in 2010 the City of Concord designated over 100 acres of land on the Concord Naval Weapons Station to be a home for a future four-year university. Since then, state and local leaders have continued to advocate for a higher education campus to be located there.
“Establishing an independent CSU campus in Concord deserves serious consideration,” said Senator Glazer. “Contra Costa County is the largest county in the state without a four-year public university. Our residents who cannot afford to move elsewhere for college would welcome an option closer to home.”
