Firefighters Battle Two Alarm Fire in Antioch, 25 Residents Displaced

by ECT

At 7:13 am Saturday, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District firefighters responded to a report of a fire in an apartment complex in the 3100 block of Lone Tree Way in Antioch.

While responded, firefighters reported seeing heavy smoke and upon arrival, located multiple units fully involved and immediately called for a second alarm response which required two units assisting from East Contra Costa Fire.

By 8:13 am, CONFIRE deemed the fire under control.

IMG_3227According to Robert Marshall, spokesperson for Contra Costa County Fire, he stated 5-units were fully involved from the get go and that the fire was already well advanced by the time we got the call and were on scene. CONFIRE is still working on investigating what caused the fire.

He also stated it appears everybody got out of the complex as they had not located anyone inside any of the apartments; however, they treated two people for smoke inhalation with 1 person being transported. At least two dogs were rescued.

The Antioch Police Department responded and provided traffic control and assisted firefighters with clearing the complex after it was reported some tenants did not want to leave their apartments. One man was detained.

According to CONFIRE, a total of 6 units were damaged and 25-people were displaced.

IMG_3218“A couple of big challenges for the fire is we had 5-units involved which by itself is a challenge. This is our second alarm fire in less than 24-hours so our crews are already tired due to the physical nature of the job. Two get two of them within 12-hours of one another is pretty amazing,” said Marshall. “We did have a challenge with people not wanting to be evacuated, we needed Antioch Police’s help to get people out and get them to safety. We had to make sure everyone was safe before we could put the fire out. One thing we always ask people, when we ask you to leave, it’s always for a good reason. We can’t force people out of their home, but if we are telling you to leave it’s because it’s not safe.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Great work by CONFIRE. And always nice job by the Antioch PD for being there and helping out. As far as people not wanting to leave their apartments when a fire is active is kind of funny to think about. Don’t know why people would not want to leave their apartments when asked by the fire fighters.
