Editorial: Respect the Roadways

Question: Should California Lawmakers begin to make stricter penalties for DUI Drivers, reckless drivers, and drivers ignoring traffic safety and not respecting the roadways?

It seems like where I live, people are not respecting the roadways as in the last two days there have been two fatal crashes and other injury related crashes in the cities of Antioch, Brentwood, Oakley and Pittsburg. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has also stepped up enforcement of Highway 4

The reckless drivers and excessive speed is particularly bad in East County. HWY 4 is super scary to drive on. People are doing all of this because THEY CAN. CHP is often on the side of the road with their heads down or on their cell phones…if they are there at all. We need more CHP, more local police enforcement, higher fines and how about throwing people in jail. Driving with/out a license….you go to jail. X amount of speeding tix…u go to jail. Driving x amount of miles over the speed limit…go to jail. Too many people are getting away with this crap.

It’s bad everywhere, but East County is especially bad. It’s the irresponsibility of the residents. Good luck dealing with people who don’t care.

This is spot on. I hate driving in East Contra Costa because people refuse to obey basic traffic laws such as speed and staying off cell phones. Police can only do so much. Sacramento needs to step up but so do local city councils.

I used to really enjoy driving. Until cell phones. Getting rid of cell phones would be a start. There will always be drunk drivers, bad drivers, etc. But people texting and driving. Or talking on their cell while driving is asinine. Things really went downhill on the road after cell phones. I would love to see them banned. More peaceful, quieter times for all. We can live without them.
