Discovery Bay Shooting and Standoff Leads to Arrest

by ECT

On January 26, 2022, at about 7:31 pm, Delta Station Deputy Sheriffs responded to a report of a shooting that occurred at a home on the 2300 block of Newport Place South in Discovery Bay.

Deputies confirmed a shooting took place and attempted to speak to the suspect who refused to cooperate.  Negotiators were called to the scene in attempt to communicate with the suspect who again did not cooperate and barricaded himself inside the residence.

The Sheriff’s Office SWAT team responded and continued to negotiate with the suspect to surrender.

The suspect unexpectedly opened the garage door after about three hours of continued negotiations. The suspect refused to comply with the commands of deputies and was taken into custody using less lethal force options.

The suspect is identified as 38-year-old James West of Discovery Bay.

He was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on the following charges: negligent discharge of a firearm, assault with a firearm, child endangerment, and resisting arrest.
