Discovery Bay: Lightning Strikes Tree, House Nearly Catches Fire

by ECT

At 2:15 pm Thursday, the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District responded to a report of a lightning strike that set a palm tree on fire and was sending embers onto the roof of a nearby home.

A full residential fire response was issued due to embers smoldering on a rooftop and it took Engine 59 (Discovery Bay) nearly 13-minutes to get on scene due to weather and school being let out.

Upon arrival, Engine 59 located a smoldering palm tree with embers on the roof of a home. They requested a second engine to continue for assistance. They cancelled Engine 93 (Oakley). Two CONFIRE units made it to Sand Creek before being cancelled.

Engine 59 and Engine 52 (Brentwood) went to the roof to remove debris from the tree as a precaution.

Firefighters were on scene for an hour.

I sure am glad that the house wasn’t engulfed when the first engine arrived. I believe someone made the comment from ECCFPD that they would be going on the defensive and just protecting nearby homes and would not be working on the one burning.
