Bristow Middle School Student Reports Suspicious Vehicle, Police Say No Threat

by ECT

On August 12, Bristow Middle School Principal Jon Ovick sent home the following message to parents warning them that a student was followed by a car on their walk to school.

Here is a copy of the letter:

August 12:

This morning a Bristow Middle School student reported to site administration they were followed by a car on their walk to school. Our protocol was followed, and the Brentwood Police was contacted. Our school resource officer came to the school to further investigate the report. Through the investigation, the car was identified and the owner contacted by police, and at this time there is no credible threat. The students parents were contacted immediately.
I encourage you to help us spread the message of safety by talking to your child and going over some basic safety tips. These simple tips will help keep your child safe.

  • Remind your child never to speak with a stranger
  • If your child walks to and from school, go over the route with your child.
  • Point out safe places for them to go if they get into trouble.
  • Tell them to never go anywhere alone—to always travel with a group.
  • Make sure your child knows his/her address and phone number, and how to reach you in case of an emergency.
  • Get together with other parents to see if you can share the responsibility of walking students to and from school.

Although the incident was found not to be a threat, student safety is a school priority. Remind your student if they ever feel unsafe at or on their way to or from school to contact a school employee immediately.

It would be nice if safe families would get together and have small signs put in the windows of their home that will show a child if he/she notices that they are being followed that they could ring the bell and ask for help.

Years ago there was a program like that. Nice to have it again.
