The following letter was issued by Brentwood Union School District Superintendent Dana Eaton as students are set to return to school while addressing the planned “TikTok challenges”.
Here is the letter that went out Friday.
Dear Brentwood Union School District Community,
We are very excited to welcome all students and staff back to school after a well-deserved break.
Our school district has become aware of the planned “TikTok challenges” that are circulating online, and we are asking families to help make sure that our schools remain safe for all students and staff members. The latest trend on the social media platform encourages students to participate in monthly “challenges” involving vandalism, violence against staff members and other inappropriate behavior while at school. We want our students and families to know this behavior will not be tolerated.
We are asking families to monitor children’s social media accounts for harmful influences or troublesome posts, talk to them about responsible and respectful cell phone use, and discuss the serious ramifications of participating in these ‘challenges’ such as school disciplinary consequences, including suspension and expulsion as well as possible intervention by law enforcement. As a community, we need to work together to keep schools and classrooms safe for all.
Even if your child doesn’t have social media or isn’t likely to be involved in this type of inappropriate behavior, please encourage them to relay this information to their peers or to speak to a trusted adult on campus if they become aware of any information about these challenges occurring at school.
