Brentwood: Police Rescue Elderly Woman from Apartment Fire

by ECT

At 12:11 pm Thursday, the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District responded to a report of a commercial structure fire at an apartment complex in the 1200 block of Central Boulevard in Brentwood.

According to radio traffic, an elderly female was trapped inside the apartment which was filling up with smoke.

Prior to Engine 52 arriving on scene a Brentwood Police Officer who was nearby heard the call come out over the radio and responded. He located the elderly woman and with the help of a neighbor, they pulled the female to safety.

Upon arrival, Engine 52 reported smoke and flames from the second story of the complex with Brentwood Police on scene with a victim. The woman was immediately asking for oxygen and was transported to a local hospital for her injuries.

During the response, fire sprinklers were activated along with the alarm sounding.

Firefighters quickly mobilized to go into fire attack and conduct a primary search for other possible occupants and performed a secondary search for neighboring unit occupants. Once the fire was out, they moved to preventing water damage to the lower apartment.

The fire was out by 12:32 pm and the estimated cost of the damage was unknown. All four district engines were on scene along with CALFIRE Engine 1616.

According to Chief Hugh Henderson, the probable cause was ruled an accidental electrical fire.

Thanks, ECT for the post. Once again, District residents have no idea how we (and some of them) lucked out on this one.

1. Kudos to the BPD Officer and neighbor who got there first and got the victim out. I hope we can meet and thank them at a future Board meeting.

2. The nearest Station to the fire was Station 54, which we have had to close, at least temporarily. First in was Engine 52 from western end of Balfour Road.

3. Engine 88 (Folsom Drive, Antioch–nearest CONFIRE resource) was already on an Antioch medical call. For our fifth engine, the CALFIRE engine was dispatched from the Sunshine station. All our resources were responding to the fire.

4. The apartment was sprinklered, which helped contain the fire until we could attack it.

5. When Engine 94 arrived (also on the closure list if we lose the Benefit Assessment) arrived, we could establish 2-out and commence fire attack.

6. Knockdown was quick, and the fire was out by 12:32 without our having to tie up all of our engines for an extended period.

7. A medical call on Oxford Lane in Brentwood came in at 1:18. Engine 82 (Bluerock Drive, Antioch) was initially assigned, but we were able to substitute our own Engine 59, which was much closer.

8. A medical call on Laguna Court in Discovery Bay also came it in 1:18. We were able to send the CALFIRE Engine 1676, which was then the closest free resource.

9. A medical call on Honeygold Lane in Brentwood came in at 1:26. Engine 82 was initially assigned, but we were able to free up and send the much closer Engine 94.

This goes on all the time behind the scenes. How long can our luck last?

Wow, are you referring to the firefighters as lucky? I would think all public safety was professional. Thank you to the professionals and not the lucky people.
