Brentwood Police Announce $73k Grant Award for Traffic Enforcement and Education

by ECT

On Monday, the Brentwood Police Department announced it has received a $73k grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) for a one-year enforcement and education program. The money will fund various activities intended to reduce deaths and injuries on California roads.

According to police, this grant will continue to enhance the department’s ability to provide traffic enforcement and education as a part of our continued effort from 2019’s traffic campaign, “Obey the Sign or Pay the Fine”. Traffic enforcement has always been a community priority and we aim to make your travel experience the safest it can be.

The grant-related activities are for the 2021 federal fiscal year, which runs from Oct. 1, 2020 to Sept. 30, 2021.

The funding from the OTS will be used for a number of programs, including:

  • DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoints.
  • Patrols specifically looking for suspected alcohol and/or drug-impaired drivers.
  • Patrols targeting violations of California’s hands-free cell phone law and vehicle code violations by drivers, motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians that put other roadway users at risk.
  • Patrols targeting the primary causes of crashes: Speeding, improper turns, running stop signs or signals, right-of-way violations and driving on the wrong side of the road.
  • Patrols specifically looking for seat belt and child safety seat violations.
  • Traffic safety campaigns for community members on distracted and impaired driving, bicycle and pedestrian safety.
  • Know Your Limit campaigns to educate and interact with the public.
  • Collaborative DUI and Traffic Enforcement Operations with outside jurisdictions.
  • Officer training to identify suspected impaired drivers and conduct sobriety tests.

“We recognize that traffic safety is a priority for our community.” Lt. Mark Louwerens said. “We are excited to once again receive grant funding through OTS which provides funding for resources to address drug and alcohol impaired driving prevention, traffic safety education and enforcement.”

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
