Brentwood: Foundation Raises Funds with Work by America’s Most-prolific Playwright

January 7, 2015 – The Brentwood Library Foundation (BLF) announced this week that “Wagon Wheels a-Rollin,” a play scheduled for Friday, January 23rd, is a work by Tim Kelly, said to be America’s most-published playwright.

The BLF hopes to raise community awareness for the plight of the library through the play’s performance, as well as gather seed-money for construction of a new library. The current library is housed in re-purposed business offices, having been displaced in 2009 for the construction of Bentwood’s City Hall, Community Center and parking structure.

Kelly wrote more than 300 comedies, dramas, one-act plays, mysteries, melodramas, children’s shows and musicals. His works are performed for a wide range of audiences, and are especially liked by community theater groups such as The Vagabond Players, based here in the East Bay.

“Wagon Wheels a-Rollin” takes place partly in a western expansion-era wagon train, in Whistling Skull Rock.   The play is filled with funny characters like Chuck Wagon, the wagon master, and Wild Bill Hiccup. Evil roles are filled by the likes of an outlaw, The Snake, and bad-girl Sue Flay. The story line includes an election for town Mayor, a Spanish Land Grant and card games. Comedy ensues.

“Tim Kelly probably created more bizarre comedy characters and farcical plays than ten of Broadway’s best writers. His king-size talent for humor opened the way for countless young amateurs to discover the fun of the theater,” said Arthur L. Zapel, editor of Contemporary Drama Service.

Tickets for the play can be purchased for $35 through Jan. 10, $40 thereafter, online at http://brentwoodlibrary.brownpapertickets.com . The play will be performed at 7 pm on Friday, January 23rd, at the Community Center, 35 Oak Street, in downtown Brentwood.

In addition to “Wagon Wheels a-Rollin” performed by The Vagabond Players, desserts made by MJ’s Downtown Café & Bakery will be provided, as will a no host bar.   The Standbys, a bluegrass and country musical group, will be performing accompanied by vocalists Jennifer and Dennis Johnson and Jim Espenson to set the mood for the evening.
