Brentwood: Driver Airlifted to Hospital After Striking Tree on Balfour

At 7:00 pm Sunday, East Contra Costa Fire Protection District responded to a report of a vehicle versus tree on Balfour Road at Sweetgrass Drive in Brentwood.

Battalion Chief 5 arrived on scene to locate a single vehicle accident with one patient trapped requiring extrication. The incident caused the roadway to be shut down by Brentwood Police as fire crews used hydraulic power tools to free the patient who was transported by AMR to a medical helicopter.

The male driver, in his 20’s, was then airlifted to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek with a head injury.

The crash is still under investigation by Brentwood Police and the ECCFPD has listed the cause currently as “undetermined.” It’s also unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved.

Several of our readers who witnessed the crash said it was due to street racing and that prior to the crash, the vehicle was seen spinning doughnuts in an intersection downtown.

UPDATE:

In a press release Monday afternoon, Brentwood police say they determined the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed on westbound Balfour before it lost control and collided with the curb a struck a tree and shrubs in the center divider. The driver sustained non-life threatening injuries. Police also said the driver did not appear under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Editors Note: While this incident was ongoing, Engine 93 (Oakley) was dispatched to an illegal burn in the 3100 block of Bixler Road in Discovery Bay. Meanwhile the Sunshine Station crew was called out to a vegetation fire, leaving the area uncovered, in Alameda County.
