Brentwood Councilman Steve Barr Announces Run for County Board of Supervisors

by ECT

Today, Brentwood Councilmember Steve Barr announced his intent to run for Contra Costa County Supervisor District 3.

Barr hopes to fill the seat held by Supervisor Mary Piepho who decided in December that she will be retiring at the end of her term after holding the seat for more than a decade.

Barr stated it feels like it is the right time for him to serve the residents of East Contra Costa County.

“After careful consideration I have decided to seek the office of Supervisor and represent the residents of Far East County and the communities of Blackhawk and Diablo. I feel it is the right time to for me use the experience I have gained serving the Brentwood residents for the last five years on city council and make a positive contribution to the Board of Supervisors on behalf of District 3 residents,” said Barr.

Barr announced the endorsements of Brentwood Mayor Bob Taylor along with Brentwood Vice Mayor Joel Bryant and councilmember Erick Stonebarger.

“Steve will make an outstanding county Supervisor and represent Far East like he has in Brentwood,” said Mayor Bob Taylor.

Barr was first elected to the Brentwood City Council in 2010 and served as Vice-Mayor 2011 and 2012. In 2014 he was re-elected for a second term on the council in an uncontested election.

While on the City Council he has served on the following committees, Operating and Capital improvement Budgets, 10 Year Fiscal Model Plan, Downtown Specific Plan, General Plan Implementation, Sewer/Water/Solid Waste rates, School Inter-agency council, and Land Use and Development.

Barr is a third generation Contra Costan and lived in Pleasant Hill from 1956 – 1978, Martinez from 1978-1981 and Brentwood 1981- present. He has been a licensed contractor for 35 years specializing in structural concrete and custom pools, and currently is providing contracted construction management services for a processing plant in Ripon California.

Barr has always been active in the Brentwood community in various roles including coaching youth sports, soccer, CYO basketball and Pony baseball, to Chairing community events such as the 1996 Brentwood Cornfest, the 2014 Harvest Time Festival and Co-chaired the Brentwood Art Wine and Jazz for three years. He served as President of the Liberty High School Athletic Boosters and Liberty High School site council from 2002- 2005.

In 2005 Barr was appointed to the Liberty Union High School District Board of directors and was elected to the board in 2006. He served as President of the Board in 2008 and completed his term on the school board in 2010.

Barr was appointed to the East Contra Costa Fire District Board of Directors in 2011 – 2014 and was recently reappointed in 2016.

Steve and his wife Kathy have lived in Brentwood for 35 years. They have a daughter Kristin age 32 of Yuba City and son Paul age 29 of Walnut Creek.

This is great, Brentwood is finally represented in the race. Not who I expected, but happy Barr announced. I know I wont be voting for Wade Harper.

Barr hasn’t earned many accolades and doesn’t have much name recognition. Barr suffered a huge loss when he ran against Bob Taylor. If he couldn’t beat Taylor, I dont know how he could believe he would be elected to a district seat on the Board of Supervisors. He is only a spoiler for Doug Hardcastle and will assure a victory for Diane Burgis in November.

I disagree , just the opposite. Diane Burgess does not stay in one place for any real time. She jump ship if something else comes along. No loyalty to positions in public office will hurt her. Welcome in Barr you are a good solid candidate.

Well you would be wrong again. Where do you come up with your comments, do you just make them up? I’ll guess local politics is not your strong point.

Barr has a horrible record. He served on the ECCFPD fireboard during 3 critical years, while it went from one bad decision to another. He ran for Mayor against Taylor and got his butt kicked…badly. I really felt sorry for him on election day. That’s right he got turned down over a guy that is known for dressing up in a Turkey suit and is considered a joke amongst his peers. Probably the only reason Taylor endorsed Barr is so he will not try again at the Mayor’s seat and its no different from Romick endorsing Hardcastle. These guys have to work together and endorsing each other is expected. You really think people in our fair town will vote Barr into a higher seat when they soundly rejected him as mayor? Now that’s far fetched.

Look at Barr’s resume, it’s a lot of filler. If he really wanted to be a county supervisor he would have started working towards it and campaigning months ago. This isn’t a race for our small town city council. You couldn’t even begin to justify him as a “solid candidate”. This isn’t Mayberry but if you want to think small, go right ahead.

He is known as a “spoiler”. Don’t take my word, ask Mr. Hardcastle who is probably sick to his stomach right now.

Voters actually appreciate candidates that work their way up to a position. Diane Burgis’ climb is not unusual and she holds a coveted regional position. Her success and experience makes her qualified above the rest. Her name has been on the ballot of every city in the district whereas no one has heard of Barr or Hardcastle.

You forget Burgis’ record of hopping from one shiny job to the next. We need somebody who will commit to at least one full term as supervisor and based on Burgis’ track record, she’d be movin’ on up in 2 years.

So far, there’s still not a viable candidate.

Anon Feb 11, 2016 - 2:40 pm

Steve is a nice guy but nice guys finish last.

So why are you trying so hard to paint Burgis as someone who would vacate the Supervisors seat? If you want a commitment, get a dog. You do know its a political destination that is an actual full time job, right? While she has served on the Oakley City Council and now serves on the Park District neither one is a job in the literal sense of the word., Many would argue both have equipped her with the experience for the Board of Supes. Its a plus, not a detractor. What you must be forgetting is neither the Oakley city council OR East Bay regional park is a JOB let alone a SHINY job. LOL!

Have you spoken with her about your concerns or are you just trying to sabotage her candidacy?

Since you brought up track records, you should review Wade, Steve, Monicia and Doug’s records. They are located in the haven’t done diddly squat file. Cue the crickets chirping………..

Anon Too Feb 11, 2016 - 3:07 pm

Yes, I think Burgis would bail for a state position if one suddenly came up. No, I haven’t spoken to her. I really wonder why you (in your many screen names) think that everybody should pick up the phone and talk to somebody about this or that.

If you read my last sentence…so far there’s NOBODY in this list of announced “candidates” that I would vote for.

As it stands right now, I’d vote for Mickey Mouse as a write in. He’s just as qualified…maybe more so since he’s already a cartoon.

Anon Feb 11, 2016 - 3:36 pm

Thanks for proving that low information voters do exist. I wonder why you,(in I don’t care how many screen names), spends countless hours making shit up, but won’t invest a minute to get a honest story. That says so much more about you, than your usual mumbo~jumbo.

Tell us, why would someone bail, for a state position? For the non existent retirement benefits? For the low pay? For the long commute to Sacramento? For having a worthless vote? Please enlighten us with your political wisdom!

All of which makes you someone that cannot be trusted. Congrats on your achievement and designation. Are you even old enough to vote?

ps, You’d deserve Mickey Mouse, he’d fit right in with that make believe world you reside in.

Wow…just wow…Are you able to keep your blood pressure under control?

So, in the case of opinions, when you want mine, you’ll give it to me?

Have a simply wonderful day.

Ladder climbing is fine in a lot of arenas, though with public servants I appreciate those that finish their terms.

Anon Feb 11, 2016 - 7:15 pm

Don’t you worry little buddy, My blood pressure is below your IQ.

Black to playing the victim because you couldn’t answer a single question, why am I not surprised?

It’s always the same game no matter the subject.

Lets hear more about Steve Barr. I am getting positive comments about him ( B wood excluded). Representing Far East County honestly needs to be corrected in this cycle and I am told Steve Barr will fill that seat with fair representation of the people.

@unome

We have scheduled an interview with Mr. Barr for Thursday. We have already met with Doug Hardcastle and Diane Burgis. We are interviewing Wade Harper today. We are still working on a time with Monica Wilson, but our goal is to release all the interviews once all candidates are interviewed.
