Brentwood City Council Seeks to Bring Back City Park Gazebo as Community Project

by ECT

On Tuesday, the Brentwood City Council agreed to move forward with a request by Brentwood Mayor Bob Taylor to construct a gazebo at City Park.

Taylor explained that the gazebo would help bring back a little bit of roots and Americana to Brentwood.

“We have to have ADA compliance and we have to do the steps right versus the old one. This new one will be right across from the library and I am looking at a 20×20 feet wide at 12-feet high,” says Taylor. “I am requesting the council to really consider this as a part of bringing back some of Brentwood’s heritage.”

In November 2007, the City Council endorsed the Civic Center Master Plan, which included the renovation of City Park. As a part of this renovation, the gazebo that had been in the park was removed.

Councilman Steve Barr, who helped build the original gazebo, asked if this was a community project with funds being raised or if the city would pay for it.

“I am curious what your vision is on this. Is it going to be a community project or a city sponsored project?” asked Barr.

Taylor said that they would try to do it with community involvement because they all were going to use it.

“I would ask you (Steve Barr) show up because you already know how to build it,” said Taylor, referring to Barr’s original work on the old gazebo.

“I guess I am volunteered,” said Barr.

Brentwood City Manager Gus Vina explained the process considerations had to be discussed which would highlight how the Council would proceed, such as allowing staff involved in the process, a construction and design plan, ideas for gazebo including drawings, site selection and following legal issues that may occur. He also highlighted estimated uses of the gazebo and construction timeline.

Councilman Gene Clare supported the idea.

“I think this is a great opportunity for the town to get together as a rallying point to build a gazebo. There has been some criticism about the city hall and its construction. This brings back some Americana, old town Brentwood,” said Clare. “You’re going to get a lot of people who are physically or financially willing to contribute to this. I am in favor of this as the city in a facilitator role.”

City staff will help facilitate the project but will otherwise remain hands off.

Taylor stated that if all goes as planned, he would like to have the gazebo up by September, 2016.

Geez, Mayor Taylor wants this done by September 2016? Good thing he doesn’t want city involvement then. If they were involved it would be done in 2018. Good luck Mr. Barr. I know you can do it! Sort of a campaign project!
