by ECT

At 4:18 pm Sunday, firefighters were dispatched to a kitchen fire at Cortona Senior Living at 150 Cortona Way in Brentwood

During this call, Station 52, who would have been less than a 1/4 mile away from the incident, and Station 59 were on a vehicle crash on Marsh Creek and Highway 4 and the District needed assistance from both Contra Costa County Fire and CALFIRE to respond along with Station 53 in Oakley.

Upon arrival, Engine 88 (Antioch) located a small fire behind the stove in the kitchen area which resulted in residents being evacuated to the front courtyard.

Engine 88 and E53 were able to quickly extinguish the fire with dry chemicals. The damage was limited to the stove top and kitchen area. The possible cause was a grease fire.

During the incident, more than 100 people were evacuated with the remaining residents ordered to shelter in place. Battalion Chief 8 requested three AMR units as a precaution due to the heat.

Once the fire was out, the seniors were let back into the building.
