AUSD Recognizes Dozier-Libbey Senior for Saving Classmates Life

by ECT

On Wednesday night, the Antioch Unified School District recognized Bryan Canty, a Dozier-Libbey Medical High School student for providing medical treatment to stabilize an injured student after an injury.

According to the District, Canty is a senior at the school and is a trained Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), who responded to an incident where two students bumped heads on Dec. 19, 2018. Canty worked to stabilize the student before EMT’s arrived on scene and possibly even prevented her from becoming paralyzed.

Principal Scott Bergerhouse highlighted how Canty enrolled enrolled in the EMT-First Responder Course for 1-year and it sparked an interest in him.

“I saw that interest sparked with him, he is EMT certified within that course, in August of 2018 he began working for CPR Fast, he continued his education through this company and began to perfect his skills in emergency medicine. He has completed a state test and has qualified to become a first responder, through CPR Fast, he is currently an instructor and provides training to the community in First Aid as well as Medic First Aid.”

Bergerhouse explained that there have been several incidents during his tenure whether it be a twisted ankle, broken ankle, arm, where Canty is always there to help stabilize.

“Many times, I follow his lead as to what we are assessing,” stated Bergerhouse.

According to Bergerhouse, on December 19, two students had a head-to-head injury with one student seriously hurt during a basketball game. One female student was on the floor seizing.

“Bryan was right there, he stabilized her head and neck until EMT got there. I just can’t thank him enough for our school and possibly saved her life. She was unresponsive from the waist down. She was seizing and they called in CALSTAR,” explained Bergerhouse. “I was a wreck, Bryan was in control as he had her head and neck stabilized.”

Bergerhouse stated the student was still recovering, but she is back in school.

Canty thanked the school board for allowing him to be a member of this community and serve the community.

“I have a passion for what I do, I love what I do. This is where I want to be,” said Canty. “To you and your mother, I want to say thank you because I work with football players and athletes all the time. I have never seen anything like this. Me being a part of this scenario, it was what solidified me knowing what I want to do. I walked away saying thank God that she is alive, thank God that I did everything in my human ability to make sure that she stayed alive…. You guys allowed me to solidify to know what I want to do for a very long time.”

Artrice Young, the injured students mother shared her thanks to Canty.

“This was the scariest moment of my entire life. This young man can be doing anything in our community, I don’t think we recognize kids enough with the work that they do, the training they receive,” said Young. “I appreciate you, you truly did save her life as she spent 3-days in ICU and another couple days in the hospital. When I got there she wasn’t articulate and couldn’t speak at all. This young man, I didn’t know he was a student, he was so calm and he was talking to the emergency medical team and talking to them… everything that I heard, I thought you were a physician, we are forever in debt to you. We owe you our lives, I don’t know how to repay you, I just want to hug you again.”

Canty was then presented with a Certificate of Appreciation from the School District.

Here is a video from the presentation last night. It begins at around the 11:15 minute mark.
