Antioch: Substitute Teacher Removed from Campus After Yelling at Students

by ECT

After KRON 4 posted video of a distraught substitute teacher in class, the Antioch Unified School District issued the following statement:

“Late yesterday, administration at Antioch Middle School learned that a substitute teacher had lost his temper with students in a sixth grade classroom. Staff took immediate and decisive steps to ensure that the substitute was removed from the classroom and the campus. Police were immediately notified and students in the classroom will receive counseling as needed. The actions of this individual in no way reflect the values of our schools or our District.  We take all instances of student safety seriously and will ensure that appropriate and conclusive steps are taken as determined by the outcome of the investigation.”

According to the video, the teacher was upset over a box of missing rubber bands and proceeded to dig through a trash can while threatening to call security to search a student.

Diane Gibson-Gray, president of the AUSD Board of Education, said Wednesday morning that all questions should be referred to the Superintendent but she believes appropriate actions have been taken at this point in time and that the police are investigating.

Update 11:20 am
According to District records, the substitute was hired in May of 2015. He has worked at Black Diamond Middle School, Deer Valley High School, Antioch Middle School and Belshaw and Kimball Elementary. However, he has primarily chosen assignments  at Antioch Middle School. As with all substitutes, he was fingerprinted through the department of justice and the FBI. Both of those screenings came back clear.

With the behavior allowed in classes by this school district I don’t know why we have any teachers left.

I agree! My husband is a substitute in the AUSD. The administrators seem more concerned with keeping students in class so the school receives the ADA money. (Average Daily Attendance)

Ive had similar issues with one of my sons teachers. While the students there are not very respectful teachers still need be able to remain calm. This school has many staff issues. They have a staff member who is not a teacher but fills in where needed and she has released personal info about my sons education to other people outside of the school her name is Nicole Cedano/White. Ive turned over all evidence to the school showing what she has done and have even had people call the school to give statements on what shes done. I called the district to make sure she had in fact violated his privacy rights and i was told that if i had the proof of what she had done then yes she did violate mine and his rights. As of today ive had no choice but to back off as Nicole has found out and is harassing anyone involved to make sure no more reports against her are made. Im sure shes done this or worse to there students as well. Any parent that can carelessly say ” my son would not feel the need to play with himself in class if his teachers did not dress the way they do” should not be allowed to work ANY children.

I can’t believe it ! How are our kids going to be able to function in life if we are going to react like this. Bring in counselors because someone hollered at them? Give me a break. I’d bet they had a butt chewing coming in the first place or he wouldn’t have gotten angry. Is anger not a valid emotion in our politically correct, liberal society. This situation would be laughed at in most areas of our country.

Fed up with spoiled brats Mar 23, 2016 - 12:09 pm

The behavior in the classrooms is what really needs to be addressed. A substitute has it one hundred times harder than a regular classroom teacher. Many of these kids are disrespectful and out of control.

Keep in mind AUSD has been successfully sued for not acting quickly and appropriately to students who have become victims. We are to expect over reaction to teacher behavior to unruly students. The consequences will be losing substitutes and highly qualified teachers in our future (mostly by volunteer movement to other districts). Sad we have arrived at this point.

The person anonymous is really a sick person. Teachers were known to be the second parents for kids . But in our modern society with freedom of everything have lost all the family values and respect for teachers. Shame on you for still siding the spoilt brats.

Something has to change. Mar 23, 2016 - 7:45 pm

How come no one is asking about the 3 different 6th grade teaching positions vacant right now as a result poor of student behavior and lack of admin support. AMS can’t find anyone willing to even apply for the jobs. Even subs are not returning after seeing the conditions. As a result the already over worked staff end up giving up over 50% of there prep periods to cover other classrooms. And the students have no consistency for their education. It’s a mess!

Where did Antioch go wrong??????? Mar 23, 2016 - 8:14 pm

Welcome to the Antioch class room. These kids need a stearn slap on their ass. If there parents want to complain then the community needs to beat them down. This is why our liberal ass community is going down the tubes. Please teach your kids some mannors and their teachers will not lose their minds. If your kids dont understand the rules then smack the shit out of them. Plain and simple

I have 2 family members who are teachers what they have to put up with I could never be a part of. Not a lot of support from the parents who always what to blame the teacher for their kids bad behavior. I never misbehaved in school because I knew my parents would side with the teacher 99% of the time. One example teacher gives kid F for cheating the parents comment “well why weren’t you watching him better”? WHAT REALLY, she was watching him that is how she caught him cheating. For goodness sake a teacher I could never be

It all these comments backing the teacher (as should be in 98 percent of the time ). It is quite apparant that the school district is pandering to the useless liberals who think the children are always right. The schools are making introverts of our kids. Just another reason our society and schools are becoming worthless. Bring back a little punishment and fear to make a better person of the young people in preparation for their journey in today’s world.

@ Unome the closet sadomasochist:

Bring back a little punishment and fear? It’s that type of old teaching style that gave way to the type of culture we have now. Punishment and fear in the hands of educators gave way to rebellion, which in turn resulted in the irrationality we see today in these schools. You really think nuns beating kids with paddles will do the trick? There’s got to be another solution besides the false dichotomy of either punishment OR today’s total leniency.

Unome Mar 24, 2016 - 5:09 pm

The word was a little. Please do not exaggerate my comment. I did not say to water board them. Discipline is lacking in schools because of over exaggerations. Our schools are producing illiterate children with no common sense. Something other than what schools are doing is needed before the entire generation is lost to dumbfounded graduations.

I sub in 2 nearby districts, I wanted to in my hometown of Antioch but they didn’t hire me. The hiring lady was awkward and wouldn’t smile, and even after declining an offer, they called me again, showing me there’s a need for subs. Everyone here going for punishment is wrong. Stop acting like bringing back the nuns of the 60’s is going to change stuff. Most curriculum is outdated and preparing kids for roles that aren’t realistic anymore. It’s about “discipline”, not punishment. I got abused as a child and that’s not the answer. We need extracurricular activities, better nutrition, and a move away from the standardized student system.

Public education hasnt always been around and it won’t always be around. We are beginning to see the breakdown in this institution. Overcrowded classrooms, low collective test scores, massive dropout rates, etc, are signs of this decline. In the near future, only the willing will be educated.

I’d say the public school system has been slowly but surely & intentionally destroyed by corporate privatization and right-wing groups who don’t want their taxes to help other people’s children.

As a result, we have crumbling buildings, overcrowded classes, exhausted, underpaid, disrespected teachers, and frustrated, overtested kids. So many great programs cut down to nothing– Art, Music, Drama, PE, libraries…. All these seemingly paid for with PTA, etc.
Poor areas have no funds, so no arts.

The school system is greatly endangered, but the powerful (aka wealthy) don’t know or care because they send their kids to private schools.

Wake up people!!!!!!

Donate ur own $$$$ Mar 30, 2016 - 9:58 pm

Hilarious. One thing that you can do instead of complaining that the right isn’t donating enough $$$ is DONATE YOUR $$$$$!!!! Concept????? Give your time and money instead of begging those cheap ass right rich people to give their $$$$ that they earned. Bc trust me, I pay enough in taxes. If the public school system decides to blow ALL the $$$ the have been given, then get rid of them! Don’t blame the right. Ask your rich lib Hollywood peeps for their $$$$$!!!!!

I am generally a strong supporter of teachers. I DO think many students are out of control. I DO think teachers are generally under (or simply UN) appreciated. I DO think some school administrators don’t value their teachers as much as they should. I DO think some parents send their kids to school inadequately prepared for learning or worse yet with an ‘anti authority’ chip on their shoulders that makes it difficult – sometimes impossible – for a teacher to do their job. STILL I think in this case the teacher was way past “over the line”. He was out of control. I think any teacher who backs this sub is doing a disservice to your profession. You are better than this, and even with all of the very real challenges you face on a daily basis, this guy is no hero and his actions are not simply a ‘reflection of how bad things have become fro teachers’ IMHO, you should put this guy in the same category you put the most unruly of your students. He is no better than they, and perhaps even worse, since his actions were under the color of authority.

Anne Mar 24, 2016 - 4:10 pm

I definitely agree. Kids are very uncontrollable. They should understand why teachers loose their patience. Can’t blame them so don’t blame it completely on teachers.

Velasquez Mar 24, 2016 - 4:37 pm

There’s ways to de-escalate situations like this. Watching the video, you can tell the teacher handled it wrong. I don’t think we should scapegoat the parents or admin or whoever, just from the situation itself.
