Antioch Rotary Club Set for Virtual Day of Empowerment for 8th Grade Girls

by ECT

On March 9, the Antioch Unified School District and Antioch Rotary Club will host a virtual Day of Empowerment for 700 8th-grade girls. “Unity” is the theme of the 3½-hour Zoom program.

The keynote speaker is San Francisco Mayor London Breed. In addition, inspirational speaker Tracie Berry McGhee will lead her “I am Enough” series, which rallies against society’s pressure to be perfect.  The day will also feature four community leaders, each a positive female role model. They will discuss their professional careers and answer questions from students. Each panelist was chosen to inspire young women to pursue their future goals.

The panelists are AUSD Superintendent of School Stephanie Anello; Dr. Yenjean Hwang, Infectious Disease Specialist; LaTasha Jones, Probation Officer; and Caroline Salazar, Chemical Engineer.

“We are very committed to the success of youth in our community of Antioch. We want our young ladies to know their options are not limited and there is a wide range of careers available to them,” says Antioch Rotary President, Tirrell Muhammad.

As part of this project, the Antioch Rotary Club is working closely with the principals of the Antioch middle schools, along with the two charter schools and Holy Rosary – Lindsay Wisely, Phyllis James, Elisa McCutcheon, Edna Heller, Bridget Spires, John Jimno, and Ed Dacus.

Muhammad said: “Antioch Rotary is very proud to be involved with AUSD and the middle schools to bring such a powerful program to our young ladies and hope to be able to move later this year with our Kings’ Conference.”
