Antioch Rotary Begins Work on Renovating Antioch Youth Baseball Fields

by ECT

On Saturday, the Antioch Rotary Club began work to renovate a portion of the Antioch Youth Baseball Fields at the Contra Costa Event Park.

Club members are working to perform repairs on the bleachers, backstops and score booths which was made possible after the Rotary Club recently received a $10k grant from Rotary District 5160 which the Antioch Rotary Club added another $5k for a total of $15k.

Lindy Maynes-Kolthoff, Club President, explained the grant was applied for last year and was accepted which aims to assist Antioch Little League.

“Last year, when I was preparing for my year of being the Antioch Rotary Club President, Kenny Turnage presented the Little League fields renovation idea. With my consent he then applied for a Rotary grant for $10,000 which was accepted! I am so very pleased how our Rotarians don’t just look at problems in our community but they are willing, even eager, to find and work out solutions,” said Maynes-Kolthoff.

According to Ken Turnage II, Saturday was the first day of multiple scheduled workdays each Saturday through the end of February which provided the weather, rotary anticipates the project being completed.

Saturday was the demolition day for the backstops and stands removing rotted wood and reconstruction will begin next week. The goal is also to fix areas which had previously been vandalized or broken into.

Rotary chose this project because it was an area that had been ignored for several years according to Turnage.

“It was a place that needed the help,” stated Turnage II. “It is one of the areas that have helped the youth of the community with the last 60 years but the area is forgotten about because the youth are not playing on city grounds because the fields are located on state property. They seem to never get the help and after years of being used by youth, it has taken its toll on the grounds and needed an update. Many of our Rotarians have participated in youth baseball so it was agreed it was a need for our community. “

Is this the same field that was fixed up a few back? The one at Summersville and 10th? That was a real jewel after its renovation, and now it’s back to be untended and in bad shape
