Antioch Man Dies After Being Shot in the Head on Spanos Street

by ECT

At 9:34 am, Antioch Police responded to the 2100 block of Spanos Street after several calls came in for shots being fired near Sycamore Drive.

As police arrived on scene, they were advised that a man had been shot in the head. They located the victim, a 42-year-old Antioch resident, on the porch of his apartment with a gunshot wound to his head. The victim was transported to an area hospital where he later died from the injury.

Coincidentally, the same victim was also shot yesterday, at the same location at 11:03 am. On 6/28/13 the victim received a grazing wound to his back and a gunshot wound to his leg. He was uncooperative with officers at that time and gave no information as to who had shot him.

Detectives have been called out and are investigating both shootings.

The 42-year-old victims name was not released at this time, however, here are photographs from this mornings incident.

Antioch is out of control.

How sad.

We need meaningful solutions.

Wow no useless comments from the regulars. Makes me wonder. I tell you we are behind a rock and a hard spot. I was in line today at the CVS on somerville. This very well dressed elderly woman made a comment that at least this time they didn’t attack a Senior, She went on to say that she wished that they would all just kill one another and also made me believe she was carrying a canceled weapon. What I think is that this just shows how scared these older folks are. I also remember some where in her statements that she lived 5 blocks from the from the newer CVS on lone-tree way but felt safer using somersville store.

Well, I bet he wishes he would have co-operated with the PD the day before. Too late now.

Charles, I live 1 mile from CVS Somersville. Barely. That place is so scary with all the people outside we go to the CVS on Lone Tree where no one is out side. We are over 70 so we try to go to the safest places. However, living in Antioch 50 years we are not afraid to drive on any street. My friend lives the next block over from Spanos and we are there all the time. They own their own home, 25 years, retired and can go no where else like the rest of us.

This is just tragic! The City of Antioch is being besieged by thugs… We need to all be mobilized and take back our Cities. I’ve lived in Pittsburg, Antioch and Brentwood over the past 18 years, I don’t remember so many things happening so close together. Maybe all the police crack down has stirred up the hornets nest. Something’s gotta give. Thanks for letting us know what’s happening….

I doubt a police crackdown has anything to do with an increase in violence. The fact is that violent crime has put Antioch in the top 100 most violent cities in all 38,000 + cities alike in the U.S. for the past few years now. Recently #4 in California behind Oakland, Richmond, and Vallejo. It’s not a trend. It’s the quality of people living there and lack of police support and industry.

I meant a lack of support for the police not “police support”.

I have lived here 30 years and the change to out town is so discouraging and scary. I have worked at a local school for the past 25 years and I can honesty tell you it starts with the young,
5% of the students are causing 95% of the problems. When the parents are called they are just as disrespectful as the students.
I was at Burlington Coat Factory today and watched 5 preteens start out the door one with a coat
that was not his, Loss Prevention stopped him and said”stop you did not come in to the store with that coat on”, the kid said ” Yes I did “, laughed, and walked out of the store, laughing with all the other boys. I asked the Loss Prevention fellow “Why did you let him go?” he said” What am I supposed to do?” How about you job?

Well, its apparent you’ve never worked retail..ALL corporate owned businesses have the same guidelines regarding shoplifters…Its not stealing until the customer has passed point of sale (usually the registers) and once they touch the front door its the employee who”ll get fired if they proceed after the thief!! Tell me how this isnt a win win game for the thief!! What ive done before is tap the person on the shoulder and say “When ur ready to pay for those items u just put in ur bag, purse etc. Ill be happy to ring u out on register 1- then you stay right next to them likewhite on rice LOL- I agree that respect, morals etc r all taught at home, if u wait til a child starts school to learn this , then its already too late

I was not in favor of the sales tax for the police, but the latest murder changes my mind! We need more cops!!

You’re police department is working with 1980’s staffing levels because of lack of support. They don’t want raises. They want more cops. Those citizens who don’t support those types of minimal taxes are only hurting themselves.

We do need more cops but the sales tax is not the way to get them. Other, better options have been presented to council but because they are opposed by the Apartment Owners Association who contributes to their campaigns council voted them down. In fact one meeting they approved them but when CAOA screamed council backed down the next meeting. We are bringing back the fee option we suggested but the sales tax is not likely to win. If both items had been put on the ballot in November with proper education of voters both would have passed. Apartment owners do not want to pay a business license fee even though one has been on city books since in the 60’s and not collected completely. Seems they city didn’t bill them so they ignored it.

This is my kids dad who was murdered. I am extremely extremely sad. I don’t know who would do such a thing. It’s horrible how people kill without any thought or regard for the families and the mothers that hurt for years to come. I am praying that these people are quickly apprehended!!!! I was moving to be closer to him, as well as other family. I will definitely not be moving to Antioch at All! It used to be such a nice area, not anymore. There are to many rowdy, lawless, mindless ass niggas out there. Count me out for good. REST IN PARADISE SWEETHEART, I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU

R – I am so very very very sorry to hear that your babies lost their father!!! No child deserves to be without their parent!!! Antioch is seriously a mess right now and I will pray for the peace and faith you and your babies will need to process what has happened. NOBODY deserves to die like that!! God Bless your little family!!!

I am afraid to many today have NO REGARD for human life. There is always a better way to handle whatever it is.

As a community Antioch needs to come together and INSIST for a better life together. They moved from the bad parts of town for a better life… they should try to give it a real try…. it really feels much better inside!

@R
My family was in L&D at the hospital where the victim was taken. Because of the hospital’s “Lockdown” and 6-8 patrol units outside plus multiple police/security stationed everywhere, I knew that a gun shooting was involved. I seen a lady outside (you? his mom?) crying and talking on the phone. As a made my way back to my daughter’s room, my heart bled for all of you waiting outside for word on his condition. We knew he had died when we heard screaming outside. When we went to the window, the same lady was on the hot pavement oblivious to it, crying, screaming, pounding the pavement in her grief. She was surrounded by many family members who were trying to comfort her although the tears and grief were apparent in their eyes also. Tears filled my eyes for them. Just to let you and your family know, my mind and heart was constantly praying for you all that God would comfort you in your grief.

(This is my post from the ECT Facebook page)
Something about the shooting incidents on Spanos Street just doesn’t add up. The victim survived being shot on Friday, but on Saturday someone returned to finish the job. From the comments that I’ve read on ECT’s Facebook page, he was the father of a new baby, a great father and a wonderful person. There were also comments that the shooting was not gang related. Obviously the folks who made these comments knew the victim, and I don’t have any reason to disbelieve what they are saying, but what I don’t understand is why did the shooter(s) single out this one man, twice?
It’s hard to believe this was a random shooting because of the subsequent shooting on Saturday. Could it be that the second shooting was due to the victim’s knowledge of who the original shooter is and they were trying to keep him from telling the police who they are? Was he the victim of mistaken identity because he wore the wrong color hat or clothes? Or perhaps he was related to someone else who cooperated with police in solving another crime and he was shot out of retaliation?
The saddest part of it all is that another woman lost her husband and another child (or more children) lost their father and will likely grow up in a single parent home where the surviving parent will have to devote their time to working in order to make ends meet, instead of being able to spend quality time with the children and get them involved in extra curricular activities that would help to keep them from running the streets. Instead of insensitive and derogatory comments about living in the ghetto, section 8 or welfare, how can we come together as a community to end this needless violence?
