Antioch: Homeless Warming Fire at FoodMaxx Prompts Firefighter Response

by ECT

Just before 7:00 am Friday, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District responded to a report of black smoke coming from a commercial building in the City of Antioch.

Firefighters responded to Delta Fair Blvd at Buchanan where smoke was coming from the old Food Maxx building by the loading dock area. Firefighters discovered a hole in building where homeless made access to create a warming fire.

Upon entering the building, they found the fire and knocked it down quickly, however the building was charged with smoke.

Upon further search of the building, they located no one inside and no extensions to other parts of the building.

A board up company on scene reported a small flare up around 9:45 am but no extensions upon firefighters arriving back on scene.

Contra Costa County Fire is investigating the incident and Antioch Police also responded to the scene.

What’s the deal w thAt shipping center? Seems like they should be able to hold the owner responsible for the blight it’s creating. I’ve heard different rumors about this and the old OSH center. Anyone out there know the truth, care to elaborate??

Don’t know the answer to your question, but Antioch needs an ordinance to declare long vacant buildings a public nuisance. My suggestion would be any building vacant for two years or longer be declared a public nuisance and be required to be demolished at owners expense. They too often leave these properties empty to use them as a tax write-off.

I miss that OSH store. I would go there several times a week to buy things. They carried everything I needed and were close. There were always people there buying, so I have no idea why they closed down.

The owner is trying to get approval for apartments. Council pretty much all for it with some changes. He is a slum Lord with 3 or 4 shopping centers. He also owns the closed theater on Lone Tree.

You mean that Chinese guy? At least he’s not getting any profit out of that strip mall because just about every store there is empty. The FoodMaxx people couldn’t work with him. They left! What a piece of work he is. He should be run out of town and even the state… maybe the country as well! A real puke! These people come into our country and then fuck it up!

The city has plans for a homeless housing center, they need to contract with theater owner. He wants to be slum lord it would be perfect match.

Terry Dec 27, 2019 - 3:57 pm

He WANTS to be a slumlord? Got news for you, Frank, the guy IS a slumlord! There was talk of another grocery wanting to occupy that space, but only they found out with whom they would be dealing, they pulled out quickly.

And that is exactly why it is so frustrating to live here. It never ends or gets better. Those shopping centers were nice when they were new. Broken, broken, broken.

This isn’t the only place these homeless are staying fires. Antioch Square shopping center on east 18th st where RiteAid is has had 3 fires in the past 30 days and two of them the fire dept had to come out. The leasing company has been called to do something about these homeless camping out here and they don’t care. They never answer there calls. CUSHMAN & WAKEFIELD 925 627-2883 or 2885. I don’t doubt that they are part of these so called slumlords too. Most of the stores there don’t stay very long, high rents, no cleanup of trash and homeless and no security for customers or businesses. Now these businesses have to worry about arsonists and homeless that don’t give a crap about anybody else just what they can steal or get free! City counsel is just as bad as these people but yet they have themselves a 70% raise. Making Antioch worse in 2020. Hats off to our police dept, they’re doing there best to help out with these problems but they too can’t if the counsel doesn’t care. Be safe A.P.D. & Firemen.
