Update: Antioch Fire Spreads to More than 533 Acres, 80 Percent Contained

by ECT

At 4:03 pm Wednesday, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District responded to a report of a small vegetation fire in the area of Silverado and Foothill in Antioch by Contra Loma Park.

Upon arrival, crews located a 25-acre fire burning which quickly grew to 60-acres and requested a full vegetation response along with assistance from CALFIRE and East Bay Regional Park District Fire.

The fire soon grew to 200 acres by 6:30 pm and was considered 30% contained. At that point, it forced evacuations of around 100 homes in the area between Grimsby Drive and Silverado Drive to Chardonnay Way.

At 7:18 pm, Contra Costa County Fire spokesperson Lisa Martinez said the fire grew to 300 acres and was 70% contained. No homes were lost that they were aware of and no one was injured.

Martinez did not have an estimate on when they expect the fire to be out as that depends on the wind and other conditions beyond their control. They are also currently gathering data on the number of fire engines on scene as multiple agencies are involved.

An evacuation center has been established at Mira Vista Hills Park in the same neighborhood where the Red Cross is offering assistance.

By 8:30 pm, it was stated that new figures showed the fire was at 533 acres and 80 percent contained while firefighters were setting up a perimeter for the night.

Great job by CFD but when fire trucks tried to get water from hydrants (two that I know of) NO WATER came out!!! Valves where either stuck or plugged! Firemen finally got one going on the corner of Grimsby and Alderwood. Thank God no homes caught on fire!
