Antioch: Bicyclist Struck by Vehicle, Airlifted to Local Hospital

At 6:58 am, Contra Costa County firefighters responded to a report of a bicyclist who was injured after being struck by a vehicle on Cavallo and East 13th Street.

Upon arrival of Engine 82, they requested a second engine to respond after a medical helicopter was requested due to injuries sustained in the accident.

Crews were going to transport the victim to a local field, but determined there was enough room to land the helicopter on Cavallo just north of the crash scene.  The patient was loaded and transported to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.

No patient information or further details were provided while crews were on scene. Antioch Police were on scene to investigate the crash.

Update per Antioch Police:

On 3/10/16, at approx. 0657 hours, Antioch Police Officers responded to the intersection of Cavallo Rd. and E. 13th St. on a report of a vehicle vs. bicyclist collision.

Upon arrival, Officers located the bicyclist, a 50 year old male Antioch resident with multiple injuries. The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and was cooperative with the investigation. The driver did not have any injuries and did not appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Paramedics arrived on scene. The bicyclist was transported to a local hospital via Cal Star helicopter.

You have to ride on the sidewalk in this town to stay safe, as this seems to happen a lot. Bigger cities like SF and Oakland have at least done something to create riding space for bikers. In Antioch it seems that bicyclists are prime targets for idiot drivers. Stay safe, everybody.
