Air District, Contra Costa Health Services Launches Investigation into Rotten Egg Odor

by ECT

SAN FRANCISCO–The Bay Area Air Quality Management District and Contra Costa Health Services are working together to investigate all potential sources of odors that fouled the air in San Francisco and Point Richmond earlier this week.

Sources under investigation include the Richmond Chevron Refinery, West Contra Costa County Composting Facility, shipping traffic and sewage treatment facilities.

“Working together with Contra Costa County, our inspectors have been out in force looking at every possible source of the foul odors that impacted San Francisco and Richmond residents,” said Jack Broadbent, executive officer of the Air District. “We believe by bringing our two agencies together, we can develop a more thorough investigation into the cause.”

“We continue to work closely with the Air District to determine the source of the odors in Richmond,” said Randy Sawyer, Chief Environmental Health and Hazardous Materials Officer for Health Services.

“We’ve also reached out to Chevron for additional reports and we’ve been working with the composting facility to avoid releases of chemicals with odors.”

The Air District is continuing to analyze available information and gather additional data such as monitoring and weather data as well as operational conditions at facilities to determine potential sources of the odor.

Air District inspectors are on call 24/7, 365 days a year to investigate air quality issues in the nine-county Bay Area. Residents can call the Air District’s 800.334.ODOR (6367) line to report odors, along with the time and date, and an inspector will follow-up on complaints.

In addition to Contra Costa County, the Air District is working with the City and County of San Francisco, the San Francisco Fire Department and PG&E to help determine the source of the odor.

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District (www.baaqmd.gov) is the regional agency responsible for protecting air quality in the nine-county Bay Area.

What I’ve been smelling It’s like a sooty charred BBQ carbon burning smell here in South Hayward. My guess is it’s a giant plume of industrial pollution that blew over the pacific and probably originated in Asia where their air quality is notoriously bad due to their poor factory smoke stack emissions regulations.
