Agopians Absence Postpones Tax Measure Votes

Lacking a full city council attendance last night, the Antioch City Council had to postpone its vote for the proposed sales tax and landlord tax as Councilman Gary Agopian did not attend the meeting.

This was a poor time to miss a meeting as the council was set to move forward on two tax measures that would have raised $7 million to increase staffing of the police department and other city services such as code enforcement.

The revenue would have been raised by a ½ cent sales tax that would expire after 7-years. The rental fee would be $240 a year, or $20 a month, for each unit up to 25 units. The sliding scale proposal would set the fees between $50 to at $120 per unit depending on the number of units a landlord has.

The reason the council needs a 5-0 vote is because its in a non-election year in terms of councilmembers up for re-election. I was told that this is considered an “emergency” requiring tax to be declared.

The discussion will be brought again at the next council meeting on June 25.

If there is no other election of council an emergency has to be declared by the council to get the other two items on the ballot.
