At 11:34 pm Sunday, East Contra Costa Fire Protection District firefighters responded to a report of a vehicle crash that left two dead just east of Discovery Bay on Highway 4.
The head on accident occurred on Victoria Island between Discovery Bay and Stockton where a head on collision pushed one vehicle into the water up-side-down leaving victims submerged under water. In total, there were six passengers in the vehicle.
According to early reports by crews on scene, bystanders who saw the accident pulled the children to safety. The children, who were 7 and under, and one adult were okay suffering minor injuries.
The driver in a vehicle that was left on the roadway was extricated from the vehicle and taken to a local hospital.
According to Chief Hugh Henderson, East Contra Costa Fire responded as a mutual aid request for San Joaquin County. He said crews from Station 59 and Station 52 assisted Stockton and Tracy fire with a head-on collision.
No further information was available and the incident is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol–Stockton.
Update:
According to CHP, the victims were a 48-year-old man and a 45-year-old female from Martinez who died after their vehicle ended up in a canal. The children in the vehicle were ages 10, 9 and 2 and another adult passenger all survived with minor injuries.
The driver of a truck involved in the accident was from San Pablo and transported to a local hospital for what CHP said was “major” injuries.
Update 2: According to Jimmy Lee, spokesperson for the Contra Costa County Sheriffs Office:
The two Deputies were the first public safety on scene. The Deputies found the vehicle even though there wasn’t an exact location in San Joaquin County. When one of the passengers told the Deputies that there were still two people in the vehicle, they removed their belts and equipment and went into the water, which was waist/chest deep. They tried to cut the seatbelts and remove the passengers, who were pinned in the vehicle.

This is so sad!! Thoughts and prayers going out to the families. Too many head on collisions, people just don’t care anymore. Lives can be saved if people didn’t need to cross onto oncoming traffic.
It’s a shame that they don’t even mention the black man from Pittsburg [by name] that saved the single adult and two children, and went in to retrieve the two other passengers from the wreckage; only to find them penned underneath the vehicle, that was submerged in the water! What slipshod, and discrimination tainted reporting!!!
Paul, it’s a shame you are so concerned about race. You honestly think “they” didn’t mention his name because he was Black? All lives matter and not everyone is a racist.
Well said. Thank you.
