Although the Brentwood Police Department did not release details of the officers leg injury during yesterdays incident at the Kohl’s Department Store, they do expect the officer to make a full recovery according to Sergeant Walter O’Grodnick.
The injury occurred as the officer tried to arrest Temu Jabari Curry, 34, of Brentwood for shoplifting. After a brief chase lasting roughly 10-minutes, Antioch and Brentwood Police worked as a team to catch and arrest Curry.
Before I get to the Press Release by the Brentwood Police Department, I must say that incidents like this where public safety officers are injured is exactly why pensions are in place and how careers could end in an instant. It’s to protect those who risk their life everyday to protect the public.

On May 7, 2013, at approximately 3:00 pm, Brentwood police officers responded to Kohl’s Department Store at 5511 Lone Tree Way to Investigate an individual being detained by store security for stealing store merchandise. When officers arrived they contacted the suspect identified as Temu Jabari Curry, 34, of Brentwood. When one of the officers attempted to arrest Curry, a struggle ensued, resulting in the officer sustaining a leg injury. Curry fled on foot and attempted to carjack a vehicle in the parking lot, but was unsuccessful. He continued to flee on foot, but was apprehended after a brief struggle with arresting officers. The attempted carjacking victim was not harmed.
The injured officer was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital and is expected to recover.
Curry was booked into the Contra Costa County Martinez Detention Facility, charged with felony battery on a peace officer, resisting arrest, petty theft with priors, and a probation violation.

In speaking with Sergeant O’Grodnick, he stated that once the suspect fled from the failed carjacking attempt, it took Antioch Police and Brentwood Police roughly 7-10 minutes to catch Mr. Curry.
Since Antioch and Brentwood share resources in terms of communication, that was a big help.
“It helped us out tremendously and one of the uniqueness of our agencies is we share the same communication channel. There is less of a delay between agencies and that helps out tremendously during incidents. Antioch and Brentwood Police positive working relationship with one another,” stated O’Grodnick.
While he did not have exact figures, its estimated four-officers were at the Kohl’s scene while six-officers assisted in search leading up to Mr. Curry being spotted with four that assisted in the arrest. He also noted that two police dogs were used (one from Antioch and one from Brentwood).
The arrest occurred in Antioch on the Southside of Lone Tree Way.
“It’s a huge relief that we were able to take this guy off the street,” said O’Grodnick.
In terms of the injured officer, details are not being released, but O’Grodnick did state he expects a full recovery and it’s not career threatening.

Appreciate the additional details you have provided. While naysayers are complaining about the picture on another post, I appreciate you showing uncensored news. Keep up the great work. East County folks need to realize that our towns have issues and by highlighting it, we can begin to find solutions.
The pictures of my husband on a gurney only an hour after he was at the hospital wasn’t necessary. As a matter of fact, our children didn’t even know their dad had been injured at work. I understand that the public should have information but the pictures, clearly identifying my husband, so quickly, sent me into damage control before I was ready for that.
I had to call my kids, my older son in the Air Force, his mother in another state and my parents before they’d see it on the Internet. Please be more considerate to the families that are in a crisis situation in the future. Give them time to get through the initial shock of the situation and put their affairs in order.
Looking at the story today, after time has passed, I’m okay with the pictures but on Tuesday, not so much.
That is what your husband and you signed up for….He’s a Public Servant, explain that to your children.
Really, so because he is a public servant who was injured in the line of duty, we can not take a time out and give the family some privacy? Regardless of whether he is a public servant, he deserves respect, even more so because of the sacrifices he and his family make every day. The information was shared right away, his picture was not necessary to satisfy your paparazzi curiosity.

Technically, the photo was shared about an hour or so after the suspect had been caught. The officer was clearly on the phone either about to text or call someone (hopefully his wife letting them know he was okay).
Again, based off the officers wife’s concerns, its something that I will address on future incidents involving officer related injuries.
I know the officer, he should be home today (tomorrow at the latest). Thoughts and prayers are appreciated. And Dclezzy, his wife thinks so too 😉
I also know the officer. His service in the United States Marine Corps, his service to the City if Stockton for 17 years and now his service to Brentwood is exemplary!! Semper Fi Marine!!
This article has some truth and some false information. When being considerate of the officers family they should be considerate of the suspects family. My daughter attends school with one of his daughters. Could you imagine how she found out about her dad and how that might have affected her at school. News is news but by naming the suspects name hurt his kids also. They have be n in this community since 1996 his children shouldnt be subject to any additional stress.

Thank you for your future consideration on posted photos, clearly showing faces, so soon after an incident such as this. An hour after the suspect was caught, was an hour after my husband was in the emergency room. The photos of his face caused undue strife for me to deal with at the time. That was my only point I wanted to convey. I appreciate your understanding and future consideration. Please know that I appreciate the photos documenting the dangers of his job, as I said before, but a day later was much better.
