5 Injured in Balfour Rd. Car Wreck

by ECT

Around 10:52 AM, emergency crews responded to a 6-car accident that left 5-people injured at the intersection of Balfour Rd. and Bypass Road in Brentwood. Originally, there was a reported fatality, but it turned out to be injuries. A medical helicopter was also on route before being cancelled.

I am getting reports that it was a drunk driver who overshot his turn lane and went into ongoing traffic. The driver fled the scene on foot and was detained by an off duty police officer.

I want to point out the placement of the engine to those who are calling on a service model change. This is a textbook example of why BIG RED ENGINES respond to medicals and accidents as they are able to block traffic and assist in getting victims out of cars who may be trapped. They are a tool that allow emergency personnel from fire, police and AMR to do their job without the worry of being hit by “Looky Lou’s” trying to see what happened. If you notice on the photos below, the engine is blocking a lane and a half forcing cars to the side of the road to pass.  The BIG RED ENGINE with flashing lights is also strategically placed to alert driving approaching the scene to slow down.

Talk about real time news, looks like you just got there right after it happened. Nice shots, glad to see no one was seriously injured. Great job by the off duty officer.

Appreciate the education on the engine, very interesting theory there. Nice pictures.

I can’t tell you the number of times that my husband had to leap out of the way of cars when he was directing traffic or was actually hit. People just don’t pay attention-day or night.

Drunk at 10:52 in the morning? What a loser!

Like Clark said… interesting theory. In part I agree with you, there can be a need for large vehicles to block paths for safety. That said, I’d rather pay some people a fraction of what a FF gets paid to drive large trucks to accident sites to block for safety, and leave our FFer’s in the Station House at the ready to fight fires. As far as emergency evac of vehicles? That doesn’t require the entire fire department to roll, two guys can rig and operate the jaws of life. As for medical response, that’s what we have AMR for… as someone who has witnessed first hand the FD in action for medical response to my dads house in Summerset, they just got in the way, and provided no medical assistance at all. Complete waste of valuable fire fighting resources. They need to be ready for their job, fighting fires. If we need more EMT’s, so be it, hire them, and leave the Fire Fighters to fighting fires. Just 2 cents worth from a retired fire fighter.
As for that intersection? We need to lower the approach speed limit on the bypass for that and Sand Creek to 45 MPH, they are speeding through those intersections at 65+ MPH on regular occurances. The overpasses won’t come soon enough, it’s only a matter of time before it really is a fatality. Thanks for the pic’s, the story, and a place to air my opinion!
