Just after 9;00 am Monday, Brentwood Police and emergency personnel responded to a report of a two-car vehicle accident at Sand Creek Road and O’Hara which left a vehicle in the canal.
According to radio traffic, the two vehicles were drag racing and collided which sent both vehicle off the roadway and extrication was needed after a vehicle rollover.
Upon arrival of AMR stated all occupants were out of the vehicles and sustained minor injuries. An East Contra Costa Fire Battalion Chief arrived shortly after and cancelled all resources as both parties appeared to be okay.
According to Lieutenant Sal DiMercurio of the Brentwood Police Department, the two drivers were a 28-year-old Antioch man driving a Nissan 350Z and a 74-year-old Brentwood resident driving a Honda S2000.
Lt. DiMercurio explained the drivers were at a red light going eastbound on San Creek at O’Hara Avenue and when the light turned green, the two men accelerated, breaking traction and continuing eastbound in what was subsequently determined to be a speed contest.
“The driver of the Honda attempted to make a sudden lane change when he saw a road crew working in the median in front of him,” explained DiMercurio. “As he did so, he crossed in front of the Nissan and was broadsided. Both vehicles spun out of control, with the Honda coming to rest on the dirt shoulder and the Nissan becoming airborne and flipping approximately 30’ down the embankment near the Marsh Creek Trail.:
Neither driver was injured and both men were arrested for engaging in a speed contest and were released from the scene on signed Notices to Appear in Court.
Both vehicles were towed.

Thank God no one was killed. It shows you it does not matter what age you are you are always have the ability to make bad decisions. Once again as much as people hate ECCFPD no matter what age you are we will all need them at some point in our life. The amount of smart people that get themselves into bad situations that need help is unbelievable . You can cut back on the fire service all you want. Pay them nothing too, but at your time of need they will be your heroes. If they are available. Thank God no ones family was coming the other direction and the guys working on the road were safe.
