Hmmm… Seems like Measure C money is making the crime worse. Silly Harper, did you accidentally fund the wrong side? It’s supposed to go the police remember?

karl dietzel Apr 21, 2014 - 5:00 pm

those stats are coming out of my ears.
i would like to know:

1) how many of those calls where handled by the dispatcher?
2) how many of those calls were assigned to an officer?
3) how many of those officers actually went to the address?
4) how many of those calls could be handled by phone?
5) what is the time between receiving the call, giving it to an officers, what time did the officer leave and arrive at the location?
6) what is the action taken for each call?
7) were there reports written for each call?
8) if officers went out, how many officer responded to that call?
9) what time of the day did the calls came in?
10) how long did it take to close a call? (incoming call, assigned to officer, officer on location, case closed for that officer)
11) what is done to prevent each call/ situation from happening again?
12 how many people, if any , got arrested per call , or got a citation (see # 6)

@Karl Dietzel, Perhaps you can schedule a ride along and you can see for yourself, and get some answers to your stupid questions you always raise, and stop making your goofy assertions that the police in Antioch are just a bunch of “malingerers” …..

karl dietzel Apr 22, 2014 - 11:21 am

don’t put words in my mouth buddy buddy
as a tax paying resident of antioch, i have all the rights to ask any and all question i please.

Redman Apr 22, 2014 - 12:03 pm

Karl Dietzel, if you really want answers to your questions, attend the city council meeting tonight. Police Chief Cantando will be presenting about crime in Antioch. There will probably be answers to many of your questions.

Vince Augusta Apr 22, 2014 - 12:23 pm

@Karl Dietzel, Do you honestly think your “Mr. Taxpayer Inquiries” are gonna get answered in the manner in which you present them on this “blog” ? I suggested a very simple way for you to get the answers to your questions, and NEVER wrote anything about infringing upon your rights as a “taxpaying citizen” ….

If you can’t handle that, I suggest then you need to go back in the bar and have another drink with the other “taxpayers” brainstorming to find solutions to the “woes of the world”.

Nobody is putting words in your mouth, just basing the observation of you from your previous blogs (for example –like the police department is “hiding” all these cops inside the police station).

KARL, GO ON A RIDEALONG !!

EastCountyToday Apr 22, 2014 - 12:41 pm

Have to agree with Vince… go on a ride along and do more than 1. Only then will one truly understand police officer response and what is needed depending on the variety of calls.

No question is stupid, but a lot of the answers will sound like they are blowing you off because one will hear an answer and may not sound right, however, once you see it in action, only then will you understand it.

For the amount of incidents we cover, we learn something new every time.

karl dietzel Apr 23, 2014 - 7:09 pm

vince buddy,

again, you are putting words in my mouth. i never said anything like “hiding”
let me repeat what i say, slowly, just for you, so you can understand it.

when the recession hit, the discussion was to lay off 5 officers, if i remember right, the pink slips were given out at the time, but then, the former pd chief, and the city manager/ council, decided to lay off ALL 20 cso’s. off course full trained officers had to take over in order to keep things running. with the side effect, that the actual “street” cops were reduced by the number of cops who took over the “inside” jobs.
my position is this from day one.

we need to rehire ALL cso’s , and all code enforcement officers, in order to get ALL sworn and fully trained cops back on the street, instead hiring more cops. money wise the rehire of ALL cso’s would be (is) much more cost effective then hiring new cops.

Vince Augusta Apr 23, 2014 - 7:37 pm

@Karl Dietzel,

I am well aware of what happened at the police department during the time you mentioned. I lived it daily having worked there for 20 and a half years, recently retired, I was one of those “inside officers” who had to take over some CSO duties in the jail, however, the last two years they reassigned all the “inside officers” (Started with 5 (in the jail), but because of injuries that number went to TWO) — all TWO OF US assigned to the jail (remember I was one of them, so I know first hand) were reassigned to work the street, and left ONE inside the station to handle evidence. So when we were re-assigned to the street, officers still had to transport prisoners to the main jail in Martinez because there was not anyone to monitor prisoners in the jail in Antioch.

There was never 20 officers pulled off the street to handle duties that CSOs handled inside the police department, what happened was officers on the street had to be dispatched and handle calls that normally CSOs would handle, but many times when a CSO was not available on a particular shift, officers still had to take up the slack created by the CSOs absence.

At the time, the idea of laying off police officers (6 not 5) was thought of as very foolish — it was and will always be, so the Police Department (Chief Jim Hyde) feeling the pressure from the other departments in the city, along with pressure from the council, laid off all of the CSOs …

Was that a bad decision ? Yes it was, but at the time of the political climate that existed in the city, and today is NO different, it would have been (would be today) “political suicide” for any elected official to go along with laying off sworn police officers, because what you fail to understand albeit the CSOs are very beneficial to the function of the police department, those individuals CANNOT and SHOULD NEVER replace sworn police officers.

Quite frankly I really do NOT know what the answer is to the police staffing question, that problem in not unique to Antioch, it is happening with every city.

Look buddy, you can believe what you want to believe, but I think that some of your questions can be answered by going on more than 1 ride along, as I suggested to you, along with Michael Burkholder.

KARL GO ON SOME RIDE ALONGS WITH THE POLICE DEPARTMENT !!

AEJ Apr 22, 2014 - 12:15 pm

@Karl Dietzel, your questions are not stupid (but you knew that already). If you really want answers to those questions, a lot of them may be answered at the Antioch City Council meeting, tonight. Police Chief Cantando will be presenting about crime in Antioch and he typically gives us those kind of statistics.

karl dietzel Apr 23, 2014 - 8:20 pm

i am proud calling the chief a “talking” friend. i address my questions and issues to him, even last night we had a good talk. he is honest and straight forward, but that has nothing to do with the cities financial problems, and without permission, i do not talk/ post about conversations/ e-mails etc. i have with him or any other people.

Chuck Apr 22, 2014 - 6:07 pm

This is frightening.Antioch gets a new call every 7 minutes 24 hours a day.The sample calls above are very serious too. Antioch needs more than 104 officers. They need twice that and get a grip on the out of control crime.Thank god for the second amendment. I hope they never take that away. If guns get outlawed only outlaws will have guns, and the government. Good job APD so far. I hope you get the help you need with more officers.

karl dietzel Apr 23, 2014 - 7:37 pm

@ECT

there is no reply button on your post, so i have to do it here.

i don’t need a ride a long, and i think that nobody can make a educated decision because of one ride a long.
all those discussion are NOT a job evaluation, or job performance issue. there is no doubt in my mind that we have a great group of people working in the pd department.

my issue is, that now 74% of our city budget goes towards one department of 100.
whenever anybody within the city has gas problems, the city is hiring a consultant. here 74% of the total budget is spend and nobody is looking for solution, except, spending even more, raising even taxes.

i strongly promote a workload study for that department in order to get independent opinion and independent advice. workload studies are not a rarity, they are done in many many pd departments, since crime and money issues are NOT just an antioch thing.
try looking up “police workload study” in google, and read some of those studies.
a little research, i spoke to one of those consultants, a workload study would go about 2-3 month, done by about 2 people, cost about $ 40,000 (last year)

keep in mind who is running the city, that is our city council.
our pd chief is an department head like all the other department heads, and has no say over hiring, nor do the other department heads. he has to live within the given budget (given by the city council/ city manager) there will be a change per our new city manager, a certain amount of money will be allocated to the police department, and then the chief can decide what to do with it. if that actually will happens may be seen.

again, as a tax payer, i think our city needs money in ALL departments, to put all eggs in one basket is just an other terrible mistake, but hey. i am not surprised, because antioch makes one terrible mistake after another.

Vince Augusta Apr 23, 2014 - 7:45 pm

@Karl Dietzel, I agree that the city has a spending problem, but it doesn’t make any sense to spend an additional $40,000 on a “workload study” to say that the police department needs to hire CSOs as well as sworn officers. California POST does the same study, and it doesn’t cost the city anything …. That is akin to thinking that spending $250,000 on a special election (Measure C) was a fantastic idea — by the way I was AGAINST Measure C, and still am to this day.

karl dietzel Apr 23, 2014 - 8:13 pm

wow..you actually can post to me without putting words in my mouth. thanks

all of the police organization say, if one does a work load study, don’t do a in-house study. how do you know a study would say “you need cso’s” i don’t know what would they say.

try to look at the city budget, and then take the word “police” out of it.
listen, the city council just spend $ 44,000 on feel good meetings. i went to several meetings, at one meeting, our city council was at the front walk way of the police department, and were drawing the earth with chalk on the concrete. come on now.
the council declared a fiscal emergency and they still give out raises.
last month the city council put a new ordinance in place , and gave themselves 4 weeks paid sick leave from now on.

the list is long, and you know it.

antioch problems are NOT just crime, and the crime problems CAN NOT be fixed with more police, we need jobs, better education of our kids, we need infrastructure for economic grow. we need economic grow, biz are leaving by the bus, at the same moment , the city approves more and more dollar stores.
we have collectable monies out there but do not collect, because we don’t have any collection department and/ or data bases.

in closing i will say, the city needs to spend money in ALL departments

Vince Augusta Apr 23, 2014 - 8:23 pm

@Karl Dietzel, You are correct, the city does NEED to spend money in ALL departments. I would like to correspond with you directly, and shed some light on my experience since you apparently won’t go on a ride along with the police to get some answers to your questions, but I don’t know how that can be done on this blog. I sure as heck ain’t gonna put my email address or phone number out in the open !! hahaha !

Everyone has their reasons for not going on a ride along, main one being possibly they are dangerous and one has to sign a waiver before going on one.
