by ECT

The Pittsburg Police Department has confirmed two people are dead and several others injured in a suspected DUI crash Monday.

At 6:03 pm Monday, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District was dispatched to a report of a vehicle crash in 800 block of W Leland Road in City of Pittsburg. Upon arrival, CONFIRE reported 7 injured including 3 critical patients, which included at least two juveniles. There was a report of at least one occupant who was ejected from a vehicle.

Multiple AMR units were dispatched including two medical helicopters. The patient count was later increased to 9 total patients on scene.

9:00 pm Update via Pittsburg Police

Early this evening, just after 6:00 PM, Pittsburg Police Officers responded to the area of West Leland Road, just east of John Henry Johnson Parkway in regards to a traffic collision involving two cars. One of the vehicles involved was a Chevy Camero and the other a Toyota Corolla . While officers were driving to the location, they were advised several of the occupants of the involved cars suffered serious injuries.

As officers arrived, they found three of the juvenile occupants from the Corolla had been ejected from the vehicle. Fire and medical staff were on scene and several of the occupants were transported via helicopter to area hospitals. Other occupants were transported by ambulance.

Initial information indicates both cars were traveling east on West Leland Road. Based on witness statements, the driver of the Camaro was traveling at a high rate of speed when he collided with the rear of the Corolla. This caused the driver of the Corolla to lose control and collide with a tree.

Unfortunately, the driver of the Corolla suffered major injuries and died prior to being transported to a hospital. The other four occupants of the Corolla suffered serious injuries, with the three juveniles seated in the rear seat of the vehicle being ejected, and later transported to area hospitals. Tragically, one of the juveniles from this vehicle suffered critical injuries and later died while being treated at the hospital.

During the investigation, the man driving the the Camaro displayed signs of impairment. The man did not suffer any injuries and was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. The two passengers of the Camaro suffered serious injuries and were also transported to area hospitals.

The Pittsburg Police Department Fatal Accident Response Team, along with detectives, responded to the scene and continued the investigation. This is still a very active incident and no additional information is available at this time. The names and ages of those involved are being withheld at this time pending family notification.

A portion of the roadway has been closed down due to the investigation, and will remain closed for several hours. Updates will be provided when available.

UPDATE #2: TUESDAY AT 11:30 AM

Early Monday evening, just after 6:00 PM, Pittsburg Police Officers responded to the area of West Leland Road, just east of John Henry Johnson Parkway, regarding a traffic collision involving two cars.  One of the vehicles involved was a Chevy Camaro and the other a Toyota Corolla.  While officers were driving to the location, they were advised several of the occupants of the involved cars suffered serious injuries.

As officers arrived, they determined three of the juvenile passengers of the Corolla had been ejected from the vehicle.  The juveniles were later determined to be a 1-year-old, a 4-year-old, and a 7-year-old.  Fire and medical staff were on scene and several of the occupants were transported via helicopter to area hospitals. Other occupants were transported by ambulance.

Based on collision evidence and witness statements, both cars were traveling east on West Leland Road.  It was determined the driver of the Camaro was traveling at a high rate of speed when he collided with the rear of the Corolla.  This caused the driver of the Corolla to lose control and collide with several trees.

Due to the extreme impact of the collision, the driver of the Corolla suffered major injuries and died prior to being transported to a hospital.  The front passenger suffered major injuries but is expected to recover.  Seated in the rear seat of the vehicle were the three children; the 1-year-old was seated in an infant car seat. All three juveniles were transported to area hospitals. Tragically, the 7-year-old child suffered critical injuries and later died while being treated at the hospital.

The driver of the Camaro, 25-year-old Christian Vargas, displayed signs of impairment.  Vargas did not suffer any injuries and was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. The two passengers of the Camaro, one being a 10- year-old child seated in the rear seat, suffered serious injuries and were also transported to area hospitals.

Vargas was booked at the Pittsburg Police Department and later transported to the Martinez Detention Facility, where he is being held on the charges of Felony Gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, Felony Driving Under the Influence Resulting in Bodily Injury, and a Violation of Probation.  Vargas was found to be on active court probation for a prior Driving Under the Influence conviction.

The Pittsburg Police Department Fatal Accident Response Team, along with detectives, responded to the scene and completed the investigation.  This case will be presented to the Contra Costa County District Attorney later this week.  This is still a very active investigation, and no additional information is available at this time. The names of those involved are being withheld at this time pending family notification.

The roadway of West Leland Road was open to traffic prior to 3:00 A.M. Tuesday morning.

I live near the accident and drive through there everyday, always cautious because there have been 1 too many fatal accidents in that area. Hopefully Pittsburg does something to slow people down and make it safe. There is a park and school in that immidiate area and a lot of people walk around there daily, including myself and children. Prayers for all involved especially the families of the deceased individuals. May God help you get through this tragedy????.

These are NOT “patients!” They may become patients AFTER they are admitted to hospitals! Who came up with this “patient” stuff, anyway? Someone doesn’t know the definition of “patient!”

Why do you care so much? People are dead and you are complaining about the use of the word “patient.” Get over yourself.

Exactly!!! Thank you!!!!

I’m not sure what’s worse the drunk driver who thought it was ok to get behind the wheel and ultimately kill innocent people. Or you worrying about the responders saying “patient”. I mean who cares it sounds better than the victims/deceased. It’s sad that, that’s all you had to say.

@ Kim…
Adolescence (from Latin adolescere, meaning ‘to grow up’) is a transitional stage of physical and psychological development that generally occurs during the period from puberty to legal adulthood (age of majority).

If I do a video chat with my doctor…I AM a patient.

Super tragic… heartbreaking. Many, many people received horrible news today..

And then there’s Kim..

Really Kim? This is what you’re focusing on? Damn, I’d hate to get your order wrong at Starbucks. I’ll just get the manager now and save you the trouble.

So what do you call injured people at scene who receive medical care from EMTs, Paramedics and Nurses? Just curious what word you might approve for use there.

Hmmm, as I worked on the side of the freeway as a firefighter, caring for a patient, I always kind of thought of them as my patient.
As Webster’s states, “a person receiving or registered to receive medical treatment”.
Yup, they were receiving treatment, like being intubated and having an IV administered.

Guessing from your use of exclamation marks (3) and feeling the need to capitalize (shouting), you’re obviously very passionate about this.

Wow! From that whole article the only thing you can respond about is the word “patient” thats making you mad??! Smh..?Praying for the families?

This is so sad. Reckless driving and speeding is a huge problem and nothing is really being done about it. Innocent lives lost while the person responsible walks away with a hurt wrist. So unfair. I hope he goes to jail for the rest of his life.

My backyard faces the park where the accident occurred and we here heard it happen. No brakes. A loud crash and a long sound of something being drug. It was horrible. We ran to see over our fence where a lady ran into the street to stop traffic. We couldn’t see the wreckage but knew it was very serious. There is a canal and tall fence between them and us otherwise we could have helped in some way. My heart goes out to the families involved and the victims of this horrific accident and to the lady who had the presence of mind to stop traffic from entering into the scene where children were ejected from the cars. She was protecting them from further harm and is a hero in my book.

Patient: A person under health care. … A person who requires medical care. A person receiving medical or dental care or treatment. A person under a physician’s care for a particular disease or condition. A person who is waiting for or undergoing medical treatment and care.

Not sure what your problem is with that term…out of the whole article you want to complain about that? SMH

Something has to be done with the road between Bailey and Range Rd. Too many lives have been taken. Myself I have angered many drivers on Leland because I was doing the speed limit. Please people every life that has been taken has left someone broken hearted.

Why is it that the DRUNK driving the vehicle which smashes into another vehicle where people are killed, but the DRUNK walks away unscathed even if his vehicle crumbles?

Shame on you Kim Shaw! Just shame on you! Ridiculous comment which should be deleted if you have any sense, since it wasn’t worth a cent!

At fault driver is on probation for prior DUI. This will probably be prosecuted as a Watson murder case. As it should be!

If you don’t like what someone posts LILLY, then you don’ have to read it! The proper term would be OCCUPANTS not patients or victims. Why weren’t those children properly strapped into their seats and the child in the car seat properly secured? Never even start your car UNTIL you check to see that everyone is safely contained. People drive like crazy on that street even though many are not drunk!

Simonpure Apr 14, 2021 - 7:31 am

Dawn…they were restrained. The crash was so horrific it literally ripped the car seats out. And how does one know if they don’t like a post if they don’t read it? They were no longer OCCUPANTS of anything other that the road. Rest peacefully little ones…so sad!
