Updated: Bail Set at $2 Million for Wife Accused of Attempted Murder of School Principal

The Pittsburg Police Department said Saturday that at 1:20 A.M, officers responded to a residence on Barrie Drive in regard to a shooting.

When officers and medical personnel arrived they found a 44 year-old man with a gunshot wound. The man was transported to a local hospital and is currently in critical condition on life support.

The Pittsburg Police Department Investigations Division responded to the scene and took over the investigation. Detectives are working on contacting witnesses and obtaining additional statements. Based on initial information, it appears the man and his wife were involved in a domestic altercation prior to the shooting.

Additional information and the names of those involved are being withheld at this time said police.

On Saturday March 16, 2019, Pittsburg officers responded to a residence on Barrie Drive in regard to a shooting. When officers and medical personnel arrived they found a 45 year-old man, identified as Paul Shatswell, with a gunshot wound. The man was transported to a local hospital and is currently in critical condition on life support.

The Pittsburg Police Department Investigations Division responded to the scene. It was later determined during a domestic altercation the man’s wife, 39 year old Maria Vides, shot him with a handgun. She was arrested and booked into County Jail for attempted murder. No one else was injured and the firearm was recovered at the residence.

On Saturday March 16, 2019 Pittsburg officers responded to a residence on Barrie Drive in regards to a shooting. When officers and medical personnel arrived they found a 45 year-old man, identified as Paul Shatswell, with a gunshot wound. The man was transported to a local hospital and is currently in critical condition on life support.

The Pittsburg Police Department Investigations Division responded to the scene. It was later determined during a domestic altercation the man’s wife, 39 year old Maria Vides, shot him with a handgun. She was arrested and booked into county jail for attempted murder the same evening. No one else was injured and the firearm was recovered at the residence.

On Wednesday March 20, 2019, this investigation was reviewed by the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office. Vides was later charged with PC 664/187, PC 12022.7(b), PC 12022.53(d) with a bail set at $2,070,000. Vides is remains in custody at the Contra Costa County Sheriffs Office Main Jail.

  1. What a horrible thing to happen! What kind of argument would lead to such a tragedy? I shudder to even think of it.

  2. I went to school witb Paul from elementary through high school (class of 91) and I loved him to pieces. Such a funny, caring guy. Always had a smile to share. Class clown for sure! I remember field trips on the bus, sitting with him and sharing the WalkMan to listen to The Beastie Boys. I also remember him riding my spree scooter and his crashing it into the bushes! It wasn’t drivable after that so he pushed it all the way home for me then told my waiting dad that he had done it. Such a stand up dude, even back then. Im praying for you Paul as well as your family. You’re loved by many my friend. 😢 💔

  3. Very sad this happened period. Huge loss for Pittsburg education. Praying hard also good Paul makes a full and swift recovery. Married for 15 years, I feel really sad for this couple. They both have a really tough road ahead. Good looking couple together.
