SPD NEWS – OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING UPDATE

The preliminary multi-agency protocol investigation has revealed the following:

On January 6, 2015, at 3:41 pm, the Stockton Police Department received a 9-1-1 call from a residence in the 800 block of Howard Street stating there was a white man who appeared to be intoxicated or under the influence of drugs in front of the residence.

The man then kicked in the front door of the residence and went inside. The occupants of the house then barricaded themselves in a bedroom. When Officers arrived, they noticed the front door was forced opened and could see the suspect at the end of the hallway trying to force his way into a bedroom.

The Officers entered the house with a police K9 and ordered the suspect to stop and surrender. When the suspect did not comply, the police K9 was sent to apprehend the suspect. The suspect produced a knife and stabbed the police K9 in the shoulder area.

The suspect, who was in close proximity with the two Officers, then raised the knife over his head in a threatening manner towards the two Officers. The two Officers then fired their department issued handguns striking the suspect several times. The suspect then fell down on the ground still holding the knife in his hand.

Another Officer then deployed a taser striking the suspect. The suspect was then handcuffed and Officers administered first aid and CPR. Medics arrived and took over CPR and then pronounced the suspect deceased at the residence.

Suspect: Patrick Wetter, a 25 year old man, documented gang member. The suspect has a prior arrest on July 2, 2014 for carrying a concealed dirk or dagger and resisting arrest. He was also arrested on August 20, 2014 for carrying a concealed dirk or dagger.

Suspect’s Weapon Recovered: A folding knife with a wood handle and pocket clip. The blade was curved and appeared to be 3 to 4 inches in length.

Involved Officers who discharged their firearms:
Stockton Police K9 Officer Gabriel Guerrero, hired in 2007, assigned to the Field Operations Division.

Stockton Police Officer Mark Afanasev, hired in 2014, assigned to the Field Operations Division.

The involved Officers were uninjured and placed on three day paid administrative leave.

Involved K9:

“Rocky” – a 6 year old Dutch Shepherd who has been working the streets for 5 years. “Rocky” was taken to an Emergency Vet in Stockton for his stab wound and it was determined “Rocky” needed to go to an Emergency Vet Hospital in Sacramento for possible surgery. “Rocky” was transported to Sacramento and a Doctor determined at this time “Rocky” did not need surgery, but needed to stay overnight for further observation and treatment.
