Seven Apply for Antioch Unified School District Vacant Board Seat

The Antioch Unified School District announced Wednesday that seven applicants have applied to fill a vacant board seat after Claire Smith abruptly resigned on April 1, 2016.

The applicants include:

  • Alonzo Terry – Businessman/Senior Investigator
  • Candida Gonzalez-Amigo – Professional Volunteer
  • Edward Daviess – Auto Parts Management
  • Gary Hack – Retired / Former AUSD Board Member
  • Joyann Motts – Local Business Woman / Former AUSD Board Member
  • Gorge Rehm – Photographer
  • Julie Young – Pampered Chef Consultant

According to the District, interviews for the Board member vacancy appointment will take place at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 4th at the District Office located at 510 G Street, Antioch, CA.

The chosen applicant will fill the remainder of Smith’s term which is set to expire in December of 2016. Smith resigned after serving on the Board for 21-years in order to spend more time with her grandchildren. They have sold their home and moved out of the area.

In November, the AUSD appointed Fernando Navarro to fill Barbara Cowan’s seat after she resigned in September. A total of 11-applicants applied for the seat.

The School District is currently searching for a Superintendent after Don Gill was placed on Dr. Donald Gill was placed on paid administrative leave through June 30, 2016. Last September, Gill announced he would be resigning at the end of the school year to be closer to his family.

The school board already screwed up with the selected of Fernando Navarro, with such a short term, they need experience and that is Joy Motts or Gary Hack… then let them all run for the seat this fall.

Joy Motts has the guts to stand up against the entrenched mold in the district.
