In an effort to further benefit the Antioch community in 2014, the Kiwanis Club of the Delta From Antioch held their 37th Annual Holiday Run and Walk for Health which is their biggest fundraiser of the year.

Although they do not yet have a final tally on funds raised during the event, they had a total of 461-participants in three races which is up from last year’s 406 total participants.

Once a final tally of funds are complete, the funds will now be dispersed between local schools, youth programs and libraries according to club President John Sullivan.

“We give $1,000 each to high school, middle school and elementary schools with the largest number of registrants. ($500 for largest, $300 for second largest and $200 for third largest),” explained Sullivan. “These cash prizes are given to the schools at the awards banquet breakfast on Jan. 14 at Lone Tree Golf Course.  We also make donations to the Antioch Library and to the Antioch PAL.  Any funds left over, go into our community service fund for other community needs during the year.”

Sullivan was pleased with the day’s event and outcome.

“We had runners from age 4 to over age 70.  I thought we had a very good turnout.  It was good to have Tom Torlakson with us again this year to officially start all three races,” said Sullivan.

The event was held at Contra Loma Regional Park in Antioch.  The event was also aimed to help promote a healthy community. A major part of the race day activities included a Health Fair providing health testing, fitness information, healthy food and drink sampling.

For those who did not attend, Sullivan stated they are always looking for contributions. They would need to send a check made out to The Kiwanis Club of the Delta-Antioch and send it to our P.O. Box.
