by ECT

At 10:28 am Monday, Contra Costa County firefighters responded to a report of a kitchen fire in the 2000 block of Putnam Street in Antioch.

Upon arrival of Engine 85 at 10:38 am, firefighters observed flames and smoke coming from the home. Crews attempted to attack the fire, but the home became engulfed and went into defensive fire mode as the home burned.

The fire caused Antioch Police to shut down Putnam Street in order to allow firefighters to work the fire.  By 10:57am, a majority of the fire was knocked down and by 11:05 am the fire was deemed under control.

According to radio traffic, one person sustained burn injuries and AMR was requested, however, its unclear how severe.  Four people were displaced by the fire.

Tuesday Update:

Per Contra Costa County Fire, the responding units arrived arrived at a single-family, single-story detached residential structure that had flames coming out of the windows and doors.  Three adults and one juvenile were asleep in the structure at the time of the fire.

According to George Laing, Fire Prevention Captain, initial investigation indicates a space heater in one of the bedrooms ignited adjacent combustible materials, which spread to the bed and clothing of an adult female causing moderate burn injuries.

She was transported to a local hospital and is being treated.  Another minor injury was sustained by an adult male, who was treated on scene.

The response was single alarm with no damage estimate at this time.
