Pittsburg Seeks Artists to Paint Murals on Utility Boxes

by ECT

The City of Pittsburg and Pittsburg Arts & Community Foundation are looking for local artists for the “Beyond the Box” Utility Box Mural Project.

This long awaited project will be open to artists in Pittsburg and surrounding cities who are interested in showcasing their work by painting a mural on a utility box. The goals of the program are to enhance the beauty and vibrancy of Pittsburg, deter unsightly graffiti on utility boxes, and bring art to unexpected places.

The deadline for applications is September 23rd at midnight and all projects must be completed by October 31st. Six (6) utility boxes have been identified for this first phase of the project, and selected artist will receive a stipend of $500 upon successful completion.

ELIGIBILITY
This “Call for Artists” is open to all Pittsburg and surrounding communities adult and student practicing artists. The Call is also open to Art Teachers that are interested in mentoring a group of students. All entries must be an original design and artwork of the entrant and must be suitable for viewing by all ages.

Project information can be found on either the City of Pittsburg or Pittsburg Arts & Community Foundation website.

Why not just leave those utility boxes alone? What I’ve seen trying to pass as “art work” has been bloody awful. Those utility boxes are just fine as they are!

I’ve seen a lot of this public “art” and it’s nothing but trash!
