Pittsburg Police Chief Issues Message to Community

by ECT

The following message was released by Pittsburg Police Chief Brian Addington. Pittsburg has since implemented a curfew that begins at 8:00 pm each day and ends at 5:00 am each morning

A message to Pittsburg Residents:

First and foremost, I want to express my sympathy to George Floyd’s family. What happened in Minneapolis is tragic and disgusting. We cannot accept behavior like we saw. The four Minneapolis officers have been fired, and one of the four officers has been criminally charged, while the other three remain under criminal investigation. I join all law enforcement leaders across our Nation in condemning the actions of these former police officers, and vow that we can, and will, do better.

The Pittsburg Police Department has an outstanding relationship with our community. Our officers are part of the very fabric of our community. Many of us grew up in the area, and several are proud Pittsburg High School alumni.

I want to reassure our community that Pittsburg police officers are hired by me based on the quality of their character and required to treat people with dignity and respect. Our department’s core values of Professionalism, Excellence, and Trust are the cornerstone of our culture and ingrained through our training program. As an added measure to ensure we have appropriate checks and balances, our officers are required to wear body-worn cameras and are required to record public interactions.

The past 48 hours we have seen increased civil unrest and looting in Contra Costa County. As you know, we have additional officers working every evening to ensure your safety. I have also seen tremendous support of Pittsburg police officers in the past 48 hours. Our residents are flagging down officers to express their appreciation for us. We have a very diverse community, and we want to say a collective “Thank you” to each of you! “We hear you; we love you,” and we will stand behind our solemn oath to serve and protect you.

I also want to thank you for working with us to keep Pittsburg safe, we have not had a single incident of civil unrest or looting in our town. We are in this together, let us continue making positive changes in a peaceful way.
