The Contra Costa County Sheriffs Office said Sunday that Detectives are continuing to investigate the homicide that occurred on Highway 4.
The victim has been identified as 20-year-old Tomas Mendez of Pittsburg. The autopsy into the cause of death is scheduled for tomorrow.
On Saturday, at approximately 2:56 PM, Office of the Sheriff Dispatch received several 911 calls of a shooting that had occurred on Highway 4 eastbound near Bailey Road. Callers reported that the driver of an unknown vehicle, described as a white sedan, possibly a Honda, apparently shot at another vehicle, a green colored Dodge Stratus, driven by Mendez. That vehicle crashed into the center divide.
Mendez appeared to have been shot. The fire department and an ambulance responded. Mendez was later pronounced deceased at the scene.
The suspect is still outstanding.

Shooting Shuts Down Highway
Saturdays shooting shut down eastbound Highway 4 as police worked the incident collecting evidence.
By 3:10 pm, a SIG Alert was issued as three lanes of eastbound traffic would be blocked off with no estimated timeline of when it would re-open.
By 3:33 pm, a hard closure was put in place on eastbound Highway 4 at San Marcos to divert all traffic off from Highway 4 so authorities could begin collecting evidence.
