At 8:50pm, Pittsburg Police Officers responded to Railroad Avenue near E. 17th Street for a pedestrian that was struck by a vehicle. The pedestrian, a 40 year old male Pittsburg resident, was located deceased on the roadway by officers.
The victim had entered the crosswalk at Railroad and E. 17th and was walking across the roadway eastbound when he was struck by a vehicle near the number one southbound lane of Railroad Avenue. According to witnesses another vehicle moments prior narrowly missed striking the pedestrian.
The driver of the vehicle, a 20 year old male Pittsburg resident, has been cooperative throughout the investigation. The driver claimed he did not see the pedestrian until he was directly in front of him.
The police department’s Fatal Collision Team is investigating this collision. There is no indication that the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The collision team will be evaluating toxicology results (2-3 weeks), speed analysis and conducting a vehicle inspection.
The driver’s statement was consistent with witnesses and he was not arrested.
