by ECT

Pittsburg, CA – City Manager Joe Sbranti announced today that he intends to retire on December 31, 2018, after 22 years of service with the City of Pittsburg. “Joe Sbranti will be deeply missed in city government, city planning, and the community,” said Mayor Pete Longmire. “His leadership is second to none.”

After working more than a decade as an engineering consultant, Joe’s career with the City began in 1996 as a Senior Civil Engineer. Upon joining the City, he oversaw the management of the City’s capital construction projects. Mr. Sbranti was the project manager for construction of the City’s $25 million City Hall, which was dedicated in 1999. The building’s unique architecture makes it a landmark in the community and unites nearly all City services in a single three-story building.

Mr. Sbranti was promoted to the post of City Engineer in 2002, and to Assistant City Manager in 2009. Joe Sbranti was appointed City Manager in 2011, after more than 14 years of service to the City of Pittsburg.

“For the past 22 years, I have been blessed to come to work each day and be surrounded by my second family. The incredibly dedicated Pittsburg Staff and the now 72,000+ residents of the City have inspired and supported me every single day,” said Sbranti. “Over that time, I have had the opportunity to play a role as Pittsburg’s reputation, infrastructure, and fiscal sustainability have continued to improve.”

Pittsburg has a diverse population from a variety of social, ethnic and economic backgrounds. Over the past 20+ years, the City has completed a program of more than $300 Million in building and infrastructure improvements funded by the former Redevelopment Agency.

As City Manager, Mr. Sbranti manages a staff of more than 270 people that provide key services to the public, including police, parks, municipal marina, a 320-seat historic theater, water treatment plant, and maintenance of more than 300 miles of streets, waterlines and storm drains. The City’s government has an annual budget of more than $40 million.

“Joe is clearly a leader in regional government and is very well respected for his leadership and accomplishments,” said Mayor Longmire. “Joe has brought the city of Pittsburg to a new level since his tenure as City Manager. This City is in a better position now due to his innovative leadership style.”

Mr. Sbranti was born in Pittsburg and grew up in East Contra Costa County. He earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Civil Engineering from the California Polytechnic University at San Luis Obispo in 1985 and is both a Licensed Professional Civil Engineer and Land Surveyor.

“Pittsburg was my birth place, the birthplace of my wife, my parents, and some of my grandparents dating back to the 1890’s. It has been the honor of my life to serve the current and past City Councils along with the residents of Pittsburg,” said Sbranti.
