Contra Costa County Fire Protection District crews responded to a two-alarm fire in an Antioch strip mall at 8:22 a.m. which destroyed  five businesses and damaged another. The incident occurred at 2309 Buchanan Road.

According to Battalion Chief Robert Marshall, the buildings are destroyed with roof collapses in most of the building.  Although the fire was contained around 10:30 am,  as of 11:55, they are still in defensive mode and still putting out “hot spots” which is keeping fire investigators out of the building to determine its cause.

The incident required 35-firefighters after a second alarm was called with traffic control coming from both Antioch Police Department and Brentwood Police Department due to availability of Antioch Police due to an earlier incident across town.

Marshall stated there was a likely delay in the reporting of the fire which caused it to get out of control.

“It was an attic fire from the beginning so that was the major issue,” said Marshall. “At the very beginning of the incident guys were in the building but we determined it was too unsafe so we pulled out. We fought it from the outside.”

Six businesses were affected by the blaze with five being destroyed which included: Buchanan Nail Salon and Spa, Al’s Giant Burgers, Antioch Jewelry, Your Personal Barber Shop and Creative Cuts, a hair salon. Empress Gardens Chinese Cuisine, was sustained only water damage.

More neighborhood businesses gone. At 1:30 they were still putting water on and the street was closed. Just beginning clean up. All those businesses were barely making it anyway so this could be the end.

Thanks CCFD, Vips, APD and all involved.

I hope they all had good insurance…. Most companies are struggling these days anyway. So sad for them…

Thanks for keeping it under control CCFD. If they would have just paid $75 bucks this might have been prevented.

What would the $75 done to prevent the fire?
