The City of Antioch held its Memorial Day Observance Ceremony Monday to honor veterans at Oak View Memorial Park in Antioch.

The Ceremony will include a variety of events which included performances by the Deer Valley Marching Band, Presentation of Colors, the National Anthem performed by Richard Asadoorian and the placement of a Rose by the Antioch Police Department and the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District firefighters.

Antioch Mayor Wade Harper spoke about how much soldiers sacrifice for this country so that other can enjoy America.

“Freedom is not free, it costs the blood of young men and women so let us remember those who served and those who are serving by doing what we can to make our country the best it can be realizing that some soldier is eating a can of cold beans so that we can eat a full meal in peace. A soldier is away keeping watch so that we can sleep soundly,” said Harper.

Harper told the crowd he served in law enforcement for 24-years, however, soldiers protected the country so he was given the opportunity to protect a city.

“They are sacrificing their safety and their comfort so that we can hear be safe and comfortable,” said Harper.
