Man Pulled from Antioch Canal After Running From Police Swinging Ax-Like Weapon

by ECT

Shortly before 4:00 pm Friday, Antioch Police arrested a man after they entered a foot pursuit of a subject carrying an ax-like weapon and entered a canal.

The incident occurred on James Donlon and Lone Tree Way where a male driving a truck crashed into a wall. He then took off on foot down the Delta De Anza Regional Trail near Sutter Delta Hospital in Antioch.

While running from police at gun point, the subject was carrying an ax-like weapon and a box cutter waving it at people—even knocking a woman off her bicycle. As police gave chase, he hopped over a fence and entered the canal.

Contra Costa County Fire Protection District firefighters were called to the scene for a water rescue as the man refused to leave the canal. Firefighters had to cut open a fence line in multiple locations as a precaution while officers and firefighters tried to talk the man down.

Police could not move in quickly to pull him out because he was threatening to take his box cutter to his throat and kill himself.

A fire captain from CONFIRE was eventually able to talk the man after the man jumped into the canal and swam across the waterway before CONFIRE convinced him to grab the rope and pulled him out.

Police immediately arrested him for being under the influence and was taken away by American Medical Response.

No further details were provided.
