Jeremy Newberry: Youth Summit speaker

INFORMATION: (925) 335-8200

Former 49er and Antioch native Jeremy Newberry will be the keynote speaker for Supervisor Federal Glover’s Youth Summit this March 16 at Los Medanos College in Pittsburg.

Newberry’s presentation will reinforce this year’s summit theme of “Choose To Be Cool,” about making sound decisions, self-control and “chilling out.”

“Jeremy has a no-nonsense way of talking,” said Glover. “Being a local kid who made it big in the NFL by making the Pro-Bowl twice will help him connect with the younger generation.”

Newberry will kick off the youth summit, which attracts youngsters from throughout the county to the Los Medanos College campus. It is an annual event sponsored by the supervisor. Glover started the youth summit for Pittsburg youth when he was a Pittsburg councilman. After he became a county supervisor in 2000, he reintroduced the summit in the mid-2000s and opened it to the entire county, targeting youngsters from 6th grade through high school.

Besides listening to motivational speakers like Newberry, a 1994 graduate of Antioch High School, the summit will have workshops covering topics as varied as CPR to finding a job and ways for conducting your life and avoiding gangs. Free manicures, 3-on-3 basketball and other activities will also be available. A DJ will entertain during lunch when there will be demonstrations of police dogs, martial arts and dances.

Young people will get to chance to talk to representatives from the college, the military, police and firefighters. A host of resource tables will provide information and services provided by private nonprofit and government agencies. The summit is free and includes a light breakfast and a healthy lunch.

Free transportation from West County and Martinez is available. In West County, call Paul Adler at 510-262-8808; or in Martinez, 925-335-8200 for details.
