Impact From Crash Reportedly Sends Motorcyclist off Antioch Bridge

by ECT

Just before 4:30 pm Sunday, authorities responded to a report of a motorcyclist who was thrown into the water atop the Antioch Bridge due to the impact from a vehicle crash.

Shortly after the crash, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District responded to the scene where they were unable to locate the driver of the motorcycle. According to witnesses on scene, the motorcyclist went over the ledge due to the high speed of travel at the time of impact.

IMG_0636A short time later, Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff Marine Patrol located a motorcycle helmet in the water with scratches consistent with a vehicle accident and potentially hitting the guard rail. Authorities were able to confirm with a nearby boater that a splash did occur.

According to radio traffic, the motorcyclist was traveling at high speeds weaving in and out of traffic before the crash where the motorcyclist may have been cut off.

It was also stated that a nearby boater located the motorcyclist and took him ashore, but that had not been confirmed by authorities. Battalion Chief 8, who was on scene, stated as of 5:30 pm no body had been located and the search was still on-going.

The incident had caused CHP to shut down all lanes of traffic at 4:59 pm.  At 5:15 pm, northbound traffic was re-opened. As of 5:54 pm, crews were still trying to locate the motorcyclist.
